🇺🇸 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀: 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 The US maternal health record is worse than any peer country in the world. The outcomes and disparities seen in maternal health make clear that our current approach to prenatal care, the backbone of prevention in pregnancy, is inadequate for addressing the complex factors that people face as they navigate their pregnancy. Digitally enabled prenatal care, which includes multiple services designed to meet the individual’s needs within and outside of clinical spaces, can improve maternal health and wellness in the US by impacting parts of people’s lives that are beyond current clinical reach. Proper oral health care is a critical part of comprehensive pregnancy care, yet our health system treats it as ancillary, and Black women are disproportionately impacted. The result is not just negative oral health consequences but overall health consequences for both mom and baby. Many people may not be aware that while pregnant, as many as 50% of all women develop gingivitis or gum disease due to a change in hormone levels. April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week, and April is Minority Health Month, making today an opportune time for all of us to recognize progress toward reducing maternal mortality and continue seeking changes from our lawmakers to improve access to necessary health care. https://lnkd.in/en5-9qiu #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #MinorityHealthMonth #pregnancy #oralhealth #healthequity

Maternal health is crucial for both mother and child, as it encompasses comprehensive care before, during, and after pregnancy. It addresses physical, mental, and emotional needs to ensure safe delivery and postpartum recovery for mothers and optimal development for infants. My recent article for The Borgen Project focuses on the state of maternal health in Bangladesh and the efforts of international NGOs to help improve the status quo. When you have the chance, give the article a read and check out what we do at The Borgen Project https://lnkd.in/g-VFg6sP

My sincere apologies for having missed this article. I want to thank babyscripts.com for bringing this vital and disturbing information to the public’s attention. If Obstetricians are not on the side of prevention — on behalf of all childbearing people — when depressed states are known to lead to suicide — then, therein lies the why for the ever increasing rise of maternal related deaths! It tells me so much about the unabashed mentality of the United States Obstetricians today! They are seemingly more interested in getting in and out of the Delivery Rooms that they want nothing to do with caring and supporting new mothers in the 4th Trimester?! It simply is not realistic nor right to include only lives lost in an obstetric setting?! There are far too many of those already! And, OB’s don’t always own those deaths as being a fault of theirs either. (Forceps Deliveries and unnecessary C-Sections should be outlawed!) What does the Hippocratic Oath of “Do no harm” mean to OB’s in this 21st Century? If Obstetricians are not ready to commit to maternal healthcare excellence, then maybe it’s time to mandate through legal channels? #maternalmorbidity #MMH #purple4prevention #MomCongress #2020Mom #Mothers #Pregnancy #mothersmatter #Advocacy #Activism #TheBlueDotProject #ShadesofBlue #ShadesofYou #SistersoftheSeahorseSociety

https://lnkd.in/ec4nDqX5 Lack of access to quality care is just one reason among many as to why Black women in the US are 3x more likely to die from a pregnancy-related condition compared to White women. So what are we doing about this? Social Health X Foundation is experimenting with small pilot intervention studies where NJ WIC nutritionists help identify high-risk pregnant moms; those with HBP, a family history of HBP, a previous pregnancy involving preeclampsia, a pre-term birth, etc. We work with the nutritionists to provide the moms with the health information and the tools they need, including an automatic blood pressure cuff and logbook, to monitor their health, take care of themselves, and protect their babies. #maternalmortality #pregnancy #healthequity #WIC #infantmortality #SDOH

It’s Black Maternal Health Week. Did you know pregnancy causes the body to produce 40-50% more blood, and if you have pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, that can be dangerous? Dr. Estelle D. Jean, MD, FACC explains how a new research initiative in cardio-obstetrics aims to keep birthing people healthier by addressing socioeconomic factors, access, and bias. It’s another example of how MedStar Health programs like D.C. Safe Babies Safe Moms are working to make our communities healthier. #BMHW24
