How international students can study to become architects in the UK:

Architectural education stands at a crucial juncture, demanding a shift from outdated methodologies to better equip aspiring architects. Urgent reforms must happen in subjects like building construction technology and materials that have outdated syllabi, stressing the need for updating in line with industry progress. Encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and redefining evaluation are crucial steps. Shifting focus from aesthetic appeal to real-world functionality in evaluations will instil a balanced approach in students. These transformative measures can collectively reshape architectural education, empowering upcoming architects to thrive in an ever-evolving field. Today ARB’s independent Commission on professional practical experience (PPE) in architecture has launched its call for evidence. This surprising trend underscores the need to delve deeper into the diverse career paths and experiences of individuals who have graduated with degrees in architecture. That's where your valuable insights come in. I am conducting a survey to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse career paths and experiences of individuals who have graduated with degrees in architecture. Your insights and experiences are invaluable in shedding light on the choices and opportunities that architectural education can lead to. Through this survey, I aim to: Explore the factors that influence architectural graduates' decisions to pursue careers in architecture or opt for alternative paths. Architectural Profession on the Verge of Tomorrow – Part Seven Naturally, this does not mean that we should immediately give up our traditional roles related to the design of buildings, cities and built environment at large. Being aware of our responsibility for the future of the planet, we should definitely continue to promote socialized, sustainable development, taking into account the entire life cycle of buildings and, through the CPD systems, constantly improve the level of our competences, which is a condition “sine qua non” for maintaining our credibility as responsible partners in investment processes, whose well-thought-out actions based on knowledge and experience bring measurable, quantifiable benefits. The experience of recent years has also led to the revision of many existing dogmas and paradigms, such as the world market based on "global supply chains". As a result, we may be facing a process of “green reindustrialization” of Europe, which, along with developing sustainable housing, improving the energy efficiency of existing resources (an area of long-term neglect), rebuilding the destruction (hopefully!) in Ukraine and other post-war areas, may become important fields of our activity in the coming years. And how should we teach students, future architects? Quite frankly, this may be the most difficult question, because it refers to an unknown future in a world of increasingly rapid changes. I think that we should continue to focus on interdisciplinary and broadband education, giving architectural students the opportunity to develop individually in the directions of their own choices. At the same time, they must be equipped with the awareness that even a best graduate of a university from the top of the world ranking list is only a diamond in the rough. In order to achieve professional maturity and not fall out in the ruthless competition, an architect must undergo continuous education, constantly expanding both “soft” and "hard" competences. And last but not least, we must not neglect the fundamental issue of professional ethics, which in today's painfully pragmatic world is too easily put aside.

☕📰 I sipped my morning coffee and read this article. Couldn’t agree more! Aspiring architects often enter the profession fueled by a desire to create, and transform their ideas from mere concepts into tangible structures. The journey from head to paper, to computer, and finally to the construction site is the ultimate goal for architects. However, the reality for many young architects diverges significantly from this initial dream. University equips architects with theory, design principles, and sustainability knowledge. But there’s a gap between what students learn in lecture halls and the practical realities of the profession. At Rowett Architecture we prioritise Site Experience for our team. Why? Because standing on a construction site, gazing at your creation, transforms drawings into reality. This early experience shapes your understanding of the sequence of construction and fosters a deeper connection to your work. We believe that this firsthand exposure during construction is invaluable for career growth. Many fresh architects leave university armed with theory but lacking practical skills. As employers, we seek those who bridge the gap—architects who grasp both design and construction intricacies Students need opportunities to witness construction firsthand, to appreciate the complexities, and to learn beyond the classroom. Experienced architects can play a pivotal role by mentoring young professionals. Sharing insights, guiding them through site visits, and imparting practical knowledge are essential steps. Final architectural project in university is tought

Steel is often considered for hot and humid climate due to its perceived strengths in durability and adaptability. However, its effectiveness can vary depending on factors like proper coatings and design strategies to manage corrosion and heat absorption. As we strive to achieve our goals for 2030 and beyond to 2050, it's essential to critically evaluate steel's suitability in challenging environmental conditions. During the workshop, we explored the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) Tool, which is ideal for architecture studios aiming to integrate sustainable practices into teaching. EC3 facilitates the quantification of embodied carbon emissions from construction materials, fostering informed decision-making and environmental stewardship in architectural design. I appreciate Jeanne Homer and her colleagues, along with educators and all participants, for this valuable opportunity for learning, engagement, and future collaboration. In summer 2022, three temporary wooden buildings - the Huber Pavilions - had to make way for a new building on the ETH Hönggerberg campus. The CircÛbi teaching project took advantage of this opportunity: under the co-leadership of two ETH professors, civil engineer Catherine De Wolf and architect Momoyo Kaijima, students collected the construction elements (or components) of the dismantled teaching buildings in order to reuse the materials according to the principle of the circular economy. #CircularEconomy #reuse #sustainablearchitecture
