Welcome to Cafe in the Dark Last weekend, I had a transformative experience at Jyoti Sroat Inclusive School's annual fete in Shillong. Among the vibrant festivities, one event stood out: Cafe in the Dark—an immersive simulation that opened my eyes to the world of the visually impaired. Jyoti Sroat, part of the Bethany Society (a non-profit established in 1981), exemplifies inclusive education by serving children with and without disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Cafe in the Dark concept: - A pitch-black room simulating total blindness - Guided by visually impaired staff - Tasks: Finding seats, locating items, preparing coffee Key takeaways: 1. Disorientation: The sudden loss of vision was paralyzing. 2. Sensory adaptation: Relying on touch and hearing became crucial. 3. Independence: Staff provided guidance, not direct assistance. 4. Perspective shift: Experiencing "their world" challenged my assumptions. This eye-opening adventure highlighted the importance of: - Inclusive design in public spaces - Empathy in professional interactions - Recognizing diverse abilities in the workplace As leaders and professionals, how can we create more inclusive environments? Have you participated in similar perspective-changing experiences? #Inclusion #Accessibility #ProfessionalDevelopment #EmpathyInBusiness

🌟Breaking Labels: My Experience with Extraordinary Kids🌟 Over the past month, I had the incredible opportunity to work closely with children who are often labeled as having "special needs." This experience has been nothing short of transformative. From the outside, society tends to place labels on these amazing kids, often focusing on their challenges rather than their potential. But when you spend time with them, those labels quickly fade away. What emerges is a group of vibrant, unique individuals with boundless energy, creativity, and potential—just like any other kids. Each child I worked with had a unique story, personality, and set of talents. Whether it was through art 🎨 , music 🎶 , sports 🏅 , or simple conversations 💬 , they consistently demonstrated resilience, intelligence, and a zest for life that was truly inspiring. 🔑 Key Takeaways: 🙋♀️ Human First: Labels do not define us. These kids are first and foremost human beings with dreams, strengths, and an incredible capacity for joy. 🤗 Empathy and Patience: Working with these children taught me the importance of empathy and patience. Every small achievement and smile was a powerful reminder of the impact of kindness and understanding. 🧒 Celebrating Differences: Diversity is our strength. Each child's unique perspective enriches our community, teaching us to appreciate the beauty of our differences. This experience has reinforced my belief that when we look beyond the labels, we see the true potential in every individual. It's a lesson I will carry with me in both my personal and professional life. ✨ Let's continue to break down barriers and embrace the incredible potential in every person, regardless of the labels society might impose. Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate world. 🤝 #inclusion #diversity #specialneeds #empathy #breakinglabels #childrenareourfuture #community #kindness #understanding #potential #strengthindiversity #humanfirst #celebratedifferences #resilience #creativity #compassion

A day at Sparkling Mindz Global It's one of the CWE (Citizenship, World, Entrepreneurship) classes with the secondary grade children and the discussion is on #fundamentalrights and Duties. A- With evolving times, can the fundamental rights change? R- What if I see a violation of any Fundamental Rights of somebody else. What can I do as a child? N- If the fundamental duty is to protect our heritage, why is the government not keeping them safe. R- what happens when somebody does not do their Fundamental Duties? Ri- I feel so proud that I am part of this country that thinks and cares for me. A- How can poor parents send their children to school and ensure that the rights are met? These are some of the many questions that children asked. The questions are to understand their role as #citizens , to hold each other accountable and to give back to the country. At Sparkling Mindz, children engage with knowledge to build #perspectives which can enable them to be global citizens. They learn to see deep and wide through different lenses. In Blended Families the Little Things Matter Navigating life in a blended family has its unique challenges, and lately, I've been pondering the importance of those small, conscientious moments 💚 Living with my stepdaughter, her dad, and our two boys, I've made it a point to ensure everyone feels valued and equal. For instance, when I set the table for our family of five, I consciously avoid using the mat set designed for four. It might seem like a subtle choice, but to me, it's a meaningful symbol of inclusion. Each place setting signifies a spot for every member of our family 🍽️ Our set of four Christmas glasses holds a similar significance🥂 Ensuring my stepdaughter receives one and I take the odd one out is a small gesture with a big message—it communicates that there's no division in our family. Interestingly, when I recently spoke to my stepdaughter about this, I was surprised to learn that she had no idea I'd been doing them. 😅 It made me reflect on the fact that sometimes, the most impactful acts of love go unnoticed. Nevertheless, it doesn't diminish their significance. In blended families, simplicity often holds the key to building a strong sense of togetherness. 🏡💪 So, here's a gentle reminder to all blended families: whether it's the choice of a table mat or a glass, every thoughtful decision contributes to fostering unity and inclusivity. 💑👨👩👧👦 Let's continue to celebrate the diversity within our families and create an environment where every member feels not just seen, but genuinely valued. #BlendedFamilyLove #UnityInDiversity #FamilyHarmony #InclusiveLiving #CherishedMoments #TogetherAsOne

Allyship isn’t about jumping on a horse and saving the day. It is about recognising your own privileges and power. It is advocating, it is speaking up, it is knowing when to pass the mic. It is knowing that at times it might be thankless, but more often than not it is seen, it is heard, it is felt. Allyship is about unlearning, helping others learn, inviting Disabled people to spaces, creating safe spaces, being accessible, being intentional, it is being inclusive. Allyship isn’t one thing, it takes a lot of things to make an ally, but it all starts with openness, accountability, learning, and actually listening to those with lived experiences. Image Description: An Unlearning Ableism graphic. The title reads, “Unlearning Ableism & Active Allyship.” Below are 12 circles with a piece of clipart centred in each and a statement below. They read: 1. Listen Actively – an ear listening. 2. Educate Yourself – a brain plugged in charged and ready to learn. 3. Challenge Stereotypes – a person holding their head as stereotypes seem out. 4. Advocate – a person shouting through a microphone. 5. Reflect on Biases – a hand holding a pair of scales. 6. Be Accessible – a stick person inside a circle, the global accessibility symbol. 7. Amplify Disabled Voices – a microphone ready to pass to Disabled People. 8. Don’t make Assumptions – a question mark inside a speech bubble. 9. Support Disabled Creators – a hand holding a phone as content symbols explode off the phone screen. 10. Centre Intersectionality – a person centred in circles which intersect and intertwine. 11. Use Inclusive Language – two speech bubbles. 12. Create Safe Spaces – a pair of hands hoovering over a group of visible and non-visibly Disabled people. #WednesdayWisdom #UnlearningAbleism #DisabilityInclusion #DiversityAndInclusion #Ableism

I didn't count the cost of committing to the #10dayscareerchallengewithCIPH, but the accountability system is too strong to give up on Day 2. Today's module from the Girl Centered Design course on Philanthropy University laid more emphasis on the "Design Challenge" - the key question you want to answer by going through the Girl-Centered Design process. Here are a few key takeaways: - Remember that child protection considerations may arise, so plan for how to address them in your design. - Focus on articulating the problem itself, without assuming solutions or causes. - Frame your design challenge as a specific, actionable question you can solve through a single program or intervention. - Consider what you want to learn, how that learning will inform your organization, and what success would look like. Also, hearing Health Plus Development Communication's experience with recruiting young girls for their life skills training program reminded me of a similar challenge we faced in the first year of the PAVE project. Thankfully, we found a solution in year two through stakeholder engagement. If you're facing recruitment challenges, here's a two-step approach from what I learnt today: - Define Your Girl: Create a short profile outlining who your target girl is. Use guiding questions like: What are her age, background, and interests? What are her needs and challenges? What is the structure of her family? What are the finances of her family? What is her religion? What is her race? - Choose the Right Recruitment Method: Given the profile of your girl, what are the best methods to recruit her? When reflecting on the options, take into account your local context and culture to determine which will be most ideal. We go again tomorrow with Careers in Public Health (CIPH) #10daysofcareerdevelopment

Understanding someone's past experiences helps grasp their future perspectives, Meaning Matters. Our comprehension shapes our reactions. Altering someone's experiences can shape their interpretation. Despite Mommy's challenges, supporting her is instinctive, yet she desires autonomy. Hospitalization taught valuable lessons, especially through Angela's influence. Learning to listen, show compassion, and embrace humility has transformed my caregiving approach. Recognizing patients' voices is key; their insights guide effective care. Rather than sticking to a rigid plan, adapting and empathizing enriches caregiving. Growth comes from learning at the feet of those we care for, emphasizing the importance of listening and soft skills. Mommy doesn’t only need to check my to do list as care. Has actually doing something ever changed your perspective of it from what you originally thought? 👩🏾🏫 Hi I am Micheleina 👩🏾🏫 I use care & education to create equity culture in under represented communities 👩🏾🏫 let’s connect #listening #inclusion #educatorsimpact #leadership #MCH
