While we tend to focus on asking what companies are doing to reduce their carbon footprint (which is important), we also need to ask ourselves the same question. Issues such as Food Waste, Fast Fashion and Plastic Pollution are 3 that we can directly influence by making conscious decisions and changing our behavior, while purchasing products and/or services including while traveling. 📺 THIS WEEK’S Assembly Update: I talk about a new bill I cosponsored, A5906A, to improve New York's food recycling and donation program. 🍏🥦 📊 One-third of all food in the United States goes uneaten, with the majority ending up in landfills or down the drain. 🗑️ This legislation aims to reduce food waste by redirecting usable food from landfills to those in need, cutting down harmful landfill gases, and saving money.💲 🍎 By expanding access to excess food for those in need, this bill helps address food insecurity, while also reducing costs for facilities with excess food production. 📉 💚 Let's make our state greener and more compassionate together! #FoodRecycling #Environment #CommunitySupport 🌱🌟

At Salt Spring Coffee, we believe there is a reason why 'Reduce' is the first R in the 3 R's of sustainability - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 '𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞' 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Reduction is the first and most impactful step in minimizing environmental impact. By reducing consumption, we directly cut down on the waste we produce and the resources we use. It's about making conscious choices to lessen our footprint, from the products we buy to the way we run our businesses. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: At Salt Spring Coffee, reducing isn't just a policy; it's an integral part of our daily operations. From minimizing packaging to encouraging customers to bring their own cups at our Café and Kitchen, every small step contributes to a larger goal of sustainability. We still change our cup and container fees which are donated to a local organization each year. These fees are a part of this initiative, turning a simple act of reduction into a means of supporting our community. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞: Last year, thanks to our customer's support, we donated $8,391 to the Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust by way of these fees. While we’re so excited and proud of this achievement, it’s our largest donation to date meaning more visitors than ever before are opting for disposable cups and containers. 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We encourage other businesses and individuals to revisit the fundamental 'Reduce' principle. We’ve just published our latest B Corp Impact Report detailing our 2022/23 ESG initiatives and outcomes. A few of our headlines: - 2% reduction in carbon emissions, water usage and waste generation. - Annual energy reduction of 4%.  - £105,000 donated to our preferred charities Hospitality Action, Bug Life and Protect Earth. - 70% of Royal Berkshire’s annual supplier spend sits with organisations who are within a 50-mile radius. At Pennyhill Park more than 80% of Hillfield’s suppliers are less than 25-miles away.   - We’ve partnered with Klimato to calculate, report and carbon label our event menus and we can see it’s helping educate #eventprofs choose more plant-friendly dishes. - We’ve rolled out Olio • Share More, Waste Less at all of our hotels. - Through LandApp, we have data led maps of each hotel and estate which helps improve carbon capture and support local habitats and increase biodiversity. For example: at South Lodge, 19,500 vines were planted to form a vineyard in collaboration with Ridgeview Wine Estate, as well as 1,267 trees and 317 shrubs being added. And boutique skincare brand Pelegrims is developing the full-circle use of the vines leaf extracts as in-house skincare products. - A net promoter score of 91% of our team say: ‘I would recommend Exclusive to friends and family as a great place to work’.   Thank you to every team member, supplier partner, guest and member who continually supports and helps us use Exclusive Collection as a force for good.
