The beauty of Scotch Whisky actually becoming a legal 'thing', way back in the 1820's is, there's quite a lot of 'old' Scotch Whisky, kicking about.
How much? It's really difficult to say and as over the years, the Scotch Whisky Distillery landscape has seen more Owners, than the Conservative Party has had leaders, it'll probably remain this way. Industrial Secrets.
Because of the myriad Owners, over the Centuries, The Scotch world also has an incredibly complex 'who owns what?' scenario, where the household name Distillery might NOT own all (or any) of the ludicrously expensive old Casks, associated with their name. It's complicated. Very complicated. Think 'Loan Deals', in the English Premier Football League. Who pays what and is the 'Star' doing all the 'heavy lifting' really yours?
It's 2024, and as just one single Cask might be worth a Seven-Figure sum, they're not just forgotten things, sitting at the back of a dark old Dunnage Warehouse, somewhere. They're incredibly valuable assets.
Romantic as it might be, the stories of 'discovered/forgotten casks' are usually VERY wide of the mark. Scotch Whisky is a business and if you were running a Distillery, which just 'discovered' a few million quid's worth of Stock, you'd forgotten about, you'd probably get fired.
The prosaic and romantic world of Scotch Whisky usually isn't.
The added fillup though is, there's going to be MORE 50 year old Scotch, next year. And the year after that. And the year after that...
What's also for sure is that each of these releases will become more prevalent and each will be an entire,
£multi-mllion Industry, all by itself.
I've been lucky enough to have tasted 50 year-old Scotch and it's very nice indeed. Is it a heck of a lot better than 25 year old Scotch and is it worth the premium?
I'm not so sure! So, it's just as well nobody will be drinking it...
