This is not Normal. This is also not an Anomaly. This is Black Tech Saturdays. This is what an Actual Tech Community looks like. Being a Founder you constantly look at the possibilities of things, so we tend to have a slightly different perspective of events. What I see is an opportunity for Customer Discovery. I see hundreds of New Customers every event. I see people that can make connections that can change lives. I see networking practice with people that are just as nervous as you are. Johnnie Turnage and Alexa Turnage have built everything a Funded company needs to make it through the Pre-Seed and Seed stage organically. BTS is no longer just a Tech Community to me. It has become a Culture. Seeing Hundreds of People packed into Newlab at Michigan Central for a Pitch Competition on a Saturday afternoon was breathtaking. I have nothing to compare it to because there is no comparison. To think. This is still the beginning. WHEW!!!

I caught myself falling into a common trap. Looking for the easy way out. I’ve been working on a 30 day challenge in January called Make It Happen Month and a few people outside of Charlotte asked if they could join. Why not make it all virtual? It’s easier to scale. It’s easier to run. It’s what most people are building anyway. But I pushed back. The 4 in person events are crucial to the design of the challenge. They give people from different fields a chance to mix and mingle (artists, entrepreneurs, social innovators) They’re high energy, fun, and have awesome local food. Most importantly, they’re where community happens. People look forward to events like Charlotte Is Creative’s Creative Mornings or PitchBreakfast because they’re a chance to meet new faces. Online communities can provide many things but they don’t help you find people to have coffee with, or go to the theatre with, or have over for dinner. Most of us have enough Facebook friends. we need thought partners, collaborators, mentors. I want Make It Happen Month to be a place to build real community. Not just followers.
