While the NEET and NTA situation has been acknowledged at the highest levels, it is very clear that the impact is the toughest for each individual student who slaved for years to take this test. Solutions are being carved by both the authorities and the courts. But there is more.
The NTA is a relatively new organisation - only about seven years old - in charge of key examinations. It has great advisors. It has inherited a legacy of examinations that have been administered well in the past. But that is not all. It is also charged with designing the future of assessments. In this Op-Ed requested by NDTV I speak of the need for building a cadre of assessment professionals.
(There are of course also practical suggestions on how to do better now - using technology, more clarity on centralisation (and decentralisation), and having smarter like for like solutions. Many exist - and may do well with sharpening such as the way the CCTV already in centres is used)

Television is a bit of a simplistic beast...there is much more to say on building smart assessments for scaled requirements. India has a challenging assessment terrain but to conflate instruction with assessment would be a mistake - they require completely different skill sets. Equally simplistic would be to assume that examination administration is a whole understanding of assessment. Add to that the future of assessments where both technology and the lack of it will need complex system design for fair examinations at scale.
The future of assessment in India is exciting, I wish I could see the joy of this design and implementation exercise in the discourse around the NTA - I hope to see more of it after the distress over the current NEET accident has been resolved.
