In the recent disastrous fire season in Canada, Bridger Aerospace was able to provide much-needed help. This was possible because Bridger didn’t have a federal contract for the U.S. season, allowing Canada to leverage U.S. resources. Just like local fire stations, rapid response and pre-positioning are crucial in firefighting. It’s what saves lives and properties, and no one questions it. So, why doesn’t the federal government apply the same strategy with aerial “fire stations”? Why aren’t airtanker bases staffed and working day and night to protect us and our properties from wildfires? Indeed, while it’s important to reduce forest fuels and harden our homes against fires, we can’t overlook the need for a swift response when fires do occur. It’s time for a paradigm shift in our approach to aerial firefighting. Prioritizing rapid response and pre-positioning of resources can ensure that our aerial firefighters are ready to act when they are most needed. Let’s not wait until a wildfire is raging towards us to call them into action. Instead, let’s keep them prepared and ready to respond at a moment’s notice. This proactive approach could make all the difference in protecting lives and properties from wildfires. The United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA)  is advocating for more stable and predictable contracts from federal agencies. The fire service has released data on it its aerial operations during the days of the wildfire in northeastern Attica, following a request from main opposition party SYRIZA. According to the data, the fire service deployed 29 aircraft (14 planes and 15 helicopters) on Sunday, 36 aircraft (17 planes and 19 helicopters) on Monday and 20 aircraft (10 planes and 10 helicopters) on Tuesday. Following reports of inadequate numbers of aerial firefighting assets, SYRIZA had requested the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (Υπουργείο Κλιματικής Κρίσης και Πολιτικής Προστασίας) to release of data on the number of firefighting aircraft deployed in Attica over the past few days. US special operators are shifting focus to jungle warfare as the potential for conflict with China grows. Marine Raiders recently completed a jungle warfare course in Hawaii showing the requirements of jungle operations. Decades of desert ops have dulled jungle warfare skills, requiring more specialized training in this environment. After spending more than 20 years fighting in the wars in the Middle East, US special operators are pivoting to other environments. With the potential for a conflict with China in the Indo-Pacific looming ever larger in the background, the US special operations community is focusing more and more on jungle operations. A relatively recent exercise involving Marine Raiders highlighted the challenges and unique requirements of jungle warfare. Note: Every clime and place….

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿. Insights from the 1996 Belgian Air Force Hercules Accident On 15 July 1996, the tragic crash of a Belgian Lockheed C-130 Hercules at Eindhoven Airport, Netherlands, claimed 34 lives. Known as the "Hercules disaster" (Dutch: Herculesramp), this incident offers critical lessons in aviation safety. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆: The aircraft, carrying four Belgian crew members and 37 young members of the Royal Netherlands Army, encountered a flock of birds during landing. It overshot the runway, lost power, and crashed, causing a fire that led to 32 fatalities. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀: 1. Strengthening Bird Strike Mitigation - Lesson: Bird ingestion caused a catastrophic loss of control. - Recommendation: Implement robust bird strike prevention strategies, including regular wildlife hazard management. 2. Enhancing Communication Protocols - Lesson: Delayed rescue response due to unawareness of passengers. - Recommendation: Ensure passenger information is communicated to all relevant airport personnel promptly. 3. Optimizing Emergency Response Training - Lesson: Delays in recognizing passengers' presence impacted outcomes. - Recommendation: Conduct regular emergency response drills to enhance preparedness. 4. Refining Air Traffic Control Procedures - Lesson: Failure to transmit passenger information. - Recommendation: Revise procedures to ensure all essential details are communicated to the destination airport. 5. Ensuring Accountability and Oversight - Lesson: Officers were relieved post-accident. - Recommendation: Establish accountability mechanisms to ensure adherence to safety protocols. Canada is one big country, with one big wildfire problem and one regulator which does not want the worlds most successful heavy category helicopter on it's Restricted Category - the Sikorsky UH60 'Blackhawk'. UH60’s operate on Restricted Categories in the USA, Australia, Europe and even New Zealand but since the mid-60’s Canada has had an aversion to ex-Military aircraft for which there's no obvious justification. Perhaps influential OEM’s on both sides of the border would rather sell new at 10X the price of military surplus? It’s an absurd situation because Restricted Category Helicopters are flying in Canada - they just do it on the FAA ‘N’ register via the NAFTA agreement and consequently FAA operators fly north of the border and take the revenue south of the border. I flew a 1976 Bell 212 with +25,000 hours TT during the 2023 Wildfire Season and it was obvious that the scale of the Fires is outpacing the aging medium/heavy fleet. My Bell 212 was one of 116 registered with Transport Canada and it had seen more fires than I’ve had G&T’s. With the exception of the AS332’s representing 8% of the registered medium/heavy fleet and Sikorsky S61’s and KMAX’s adding another 10% of diversity, the bulk of the fighting force are stoic, reliable Bell's which on average have been flying for half a century! In total there are 190 Bell medium or heavy helicopters across Canada. In the last five years Bell 204’s numbers dropped 22% (essentially obsolete in Western Canada – superseded by the AS350B3) and only seven Bell 214’s are airworthy (down 23%). Bell 412’s numbers are 19% less with only 18 on the register, but the greatest change was Bell 205’s down by a shocking 38%. There was improvement with Bell 212’s increasing 9% to 116 airframes but across the sector the number of total airframes decreased by 10%. The proverbial eggs are all in one basket because 61% of the entire medium and heavy helicopter fleet are legacy Bell 212’s. Just imagine if an emergency AD was released in the middle of July? As much as I love flying the 212 and 214ST, I can’t see a future without the Sikorsky UH60. Realistically, if the industry wants to scale up to meet the increased burden of larger and longer fire seasons, then Sikorsky is the only manufacturer which has produced a suitable platform in any significant volume over the last 30 years. A small area of low pressure located about 150 miles east of the northernmost Bahamas continues to produce disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. While environmental conditions are only marginally conducive due to nearby dry air, further development of this system could lead to the development of a tropical depression while the low moves west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph and approaches the northeastern coast of Florida or the Georgia coast early on Friday. An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate this system this afternoon, if necessary. * Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...40 percent. * Formation chance through 7 days...medium...40 percent.
