Meet #NSRIFellow Dr. Andrew Harms, assistant professor in electrical & computer engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln 🤝 His research focuses on signal processing, efficient sampling and processing of signals, information theory and signal processing for radar systems. Dr. Harms served as a cohort leader for the 2024 NSRI strategic deterrence interns, facilitating a project that focuses on Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (JEMSO) and the development of advanced algorithms for active radio frequency (RF) signal cancellation using destructive interference techniques. Question: What national security challenges do you think you could offer your expertise to solve? Answer: I am eager to contribute to challenges in robust communication systems that are resilient to interference and can offer secure and reliable communication links. Grace Brewster Hopper was an American computer scientist, mathematician, United States Navy rear admiral, and one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer. Hopper was the first person to record a bug found in the Mark I computer and, indeed, the first to attach said bug to her diary. The software testing industry considers her the world’s first tester. You don't need to go to an Ivy League school to have a great career. CUNY Baruch College and Georgetown send nearly as many students into Finance as Penn, with its Wharton School. Meanwhile, Carnegie Mellon, Olin, and Harvey Mudd College send as many of their students into high-paying tech careers as schools like MIT. In partnership with The Wall Street Journal, we studied graduate outcomes across a range of public and private institutions to understand which schools most often and most effectively propelled students into high-flying careers in finance, tech, and consulting.  Perhaps most striking was the performance of servicemember academies - the Naval Academy and the US military academy are among the top-ranked schools in the share of alumni who work in consulting and finance - a clear indicator that employers highly value the attributes instilled by these institutions.
