What a fantastic experience at AdvaMed's MedTechCon this week. I sought to understand how rising "healthcare consumerism" in the US is affecting trends in the often slower-moving healthcare industry. My key takeaway is that evolving consumer demands combined with our tech-industry raising the bar on the end-to-end patient journey are pushing the boundaries of traditional MedTech in unprecedented ways. Consumer driven tech and traditional medtech have never been closer. It was clear that up-and-coming startups AND established medtech giants are implementing disruptive tech-industry inspired business models, reacting to shifting settings of care, driving digital health enabled care delivery models, servicing more educated healthcare consumers, and leveraging social media to reach patients. Much of this in order to meet evolving expectations of healthcare consumers who often express frustration with the healthcare system. By contrast, traditional reimbursement models are lagging behind and have not yet seen the type of innovation that would allow faster adoption of innovative technologies that meet unmet patient and healthcare consumer needs. There is a palpable tension between traditional and innovative care models. This tension is driving the medtech industry forward in new ways. As keynote speaker Ginni Rometty wisely said, "comfort and growth do not go together". And so, I encourage all of us in medtech to get comfortable being uncomfortable and reimagine what great healthcare and well-care looks like. We need it. Here is one top tip for every healthtech innovator. Make sure your demo works when you are presenting it to clinicians. I have had over 5 experiences where a company: - Pitched an amazing story - Talked a big game - Promised me the world But when it was time to show us the demo, 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥. What this tells me as a clinician is that: A. You have not prepared for this session at all. B. You don't communicate with your own team. C. You absolutely do not value my time. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨. Not the shoddy start-up that tries to patch things up with smokes and mirrors. Once, I had a company pull out a PowerPoint after their demo failed to tell us how it WOULD work if it did.
