I know times are tough for everyone right now, and it's no different for me. I'm here humbly asking for any help with finding a new position. I'm currently working part time in retail and it isn't enough to make ends meet. I took this position as a stepping stone or a placeholder until I could get back into the marketing and advertising world, but it's been over a year now and it's getting more and more difficult to get noticed, despite my years of experience. Why do 'marketing' and 'admin' seem to go hand-in-hand so often on job roles? Just saw a role advertised as 'part-time marketing/admin assistant', and can't quite believe in 2024 that is still a thing. Two different skill sets, two different role functions and surely, therefore, two completely different jobs? Any company combining these two job functions into one clearly can't be respecting either their marketing or admin staff. What do my fellow marketers think? Is there a place for these dual-function roles still? #Marketing #Admin

Here's a quick exercise: after writing the job description for the marcom role, take a moment to read it from a candidate's perspective. Ask yourself, "Would you want to do this job? Does it seem reasonable?" If the answer is no to both, consider potential applicants' reactions. Avoid putting people on the fast track to burnout.

Schools are pretty bad at hiring marketing and communications professionals. I recently saw a job listing for a 'Marketing/Communications Manager' role. They're looking for someone to juggle single-handedly: - Social Media - Digital Ads - SEO - Website Updates - Graphic Design - Copywriter - Chief Photographer - Plus, tracking all these efforts with reports - And wait for it... work some nights and weekends, and be a visible member of the community. I'm embarrassed to share the low salary range. Folks, this isn’t just a job; it's an entire team's workload. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident and only one example of how schools struggle to hire MarCom professionals. Do better. Our industry deserves it, and so do the people who power it.

Specialist ≠ Entry-level I was recently asked on my newsletter: "Do you find issues where having specialists serving clients keeps quality limited? Being immersed on strategy is helpful, but I don't want to hire entry-level generalists forever" As you scale up your services and hire specialist roles it's natural in the beginning to hire entry-level folks to fill roles like copy editing, social media coordinating, video editing, etc. But does that mean you'll be on the hamster wheel of hiring entry-level generalists forever? No. Specialist ≠ Entry-level I focus on getting high-level specialists whenever I can. Some specialists MAY have entry-level people supporting them but I focus on quality and talent. That way, it's less stressful for me (or managers/drivers) to manage them and it fits my personality: • I want quality work • I am very anti micro managey • I have high expectations for my team
