We always enjoy seeing our industry colleagues at events and representatives from our rail team had a productive evening networking and discussing key issues within the sector at the TransCityRail South conference and dinner. We also sponsored the reception for the event , which provided attendees with the chance to talk everything that's happening in rail in the south of England. We look forward to the next one! #design #engineering #projectdelivery #rail #railways #transcityrail #transportation #events

Sweco wins €35m #contract to plan major Stockholm #rail upgrade. Stockholm-headquartered consultant Sweco has won a €35m contract from the Swedish Transport Administration to plan a major #rail-capacity #upgrade on the busy East Coast Line between Uppsala and Stockholm. Over the next 11 years, Sweco will prepare plans and #tender documents for the “Four-tracks Uppsala” programme, which will add two more #tracks to the 23km two-track line, plus a new #station in the town of Bergsbrunna and an expanded Uppsala Central Station. The regions around Uppsala and Stockholm are growing fast, and the two-#track rail corridor now has reached capacity both for passenger and #freight #traffic. Sweco will also advise on associated #road works, grade separations, #water and #sewage, as well as the two extra tracks. #Construction on the first phase is expected to start in 2026. Sweco’s business area president Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson said: “It will be possible to #transport more freight in a climate-smart manner and, for passengers, the expansion will result in more punctual #trains, more departures and more convenient #sustainable travel.”

The construction of the Fehmarn Belt fixed link, an ambitious and groundbreaking project that promises to revolutionize European transportation, officially commenced in 2020. This immersed tunnel, set to be the world's longest of its kind, will stretch across the Baltic Sea's Fehmarn Belt, linking the Danish island of Lolland with the German island of Fehmarn. The design of this tunnel is a marvel of modern engineering. Spanning 17.6 km, it will surpass Turkey's Marmaray Tunnel as the longest immersed tunnel ever constructed. Imagine a structure lying 35 meters deep in the sea, consisting of 79 standard elements, each 217 meters long. The tunnel will accommodate two road tubes, an emergency tube and two rail tubes. Railways Explained previosly delved into this topic, but let's not forget the latest developments. Deutsche Bahn has commenced the construction for the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel access. The upgrade extends to the railway running 11.4 kilometers along Fehmarn Island, from the Fehmarnsund Bridge to Puttgarden. This will eventually become a double-track line. Moreover, the connection from the island to the German mainland in Lübeck, set to start in 2026, involves constructing 55 kilometers of new railway line. When the infrastructure is completed in 2029, the impact will be substantial. Imagine 100 freight trains daily running through this tunnel. This new route will allow freight trains to bypass a 160-kilometer detour through Denmark, significantly streamlining European logistics. The Fehmarn Belt Tunnel managed by Femern A/S, symbolizes not just a feat of engineering but also a new era in transportation, promising faster, more efficient travel and trade routes across Europe.

Major construction kicks off to fix Germany's railway system Overcrowded, delayed, canceled: Deutsche Bahn trains are notoriously unpunctual. And the situation will worsen before it improves. Anyone traveling with Deutsche Bahn over the next few years will need more time –– and patience. On July 15th, the day after the final game of the European Football Championship, the state-owned railway company will start a massive #renovation program. It is planning to renew 40 primary #train routes by 2030. Each route will be closed for several months while #construction work is carried out. The first slated for renewal is the central German route connecting Frankfurt and Mannheim known as the Riedbahn. "The Riedbahn will be the initial building block of a high-performance network," says Berthold Huber, Deutsche Bahn's Director of Infrastructure. "Nowhere else in Germany is the infrastructure currently under more strain. Around 300 local, long-distance and #freight trains travel along this route every day." This route sees regular disruptions caused by defective switches, signal boxes or #overheadpowerlines, due to disrepair. These in turn delay almost every train on the approximately 70-kilometer-long (43-mile-long) Riedbahn route, which affects rail traffic across #Germany. Delays and cancellations Investments in rail #infrastructure: needed but expensive Frankfurt Airport will be disconnected Read more below https://lnkd.in/eUBZQdRF.

From high-speed rail as ‘just a rail line’ to a major economic growth corridor changed how we think about the role of rail infrastructure and the catalytic impact it can have on economic growth and urban transformation. Although difficult to quantify, the transformative and catalyst effect of major rail projects and stations has been demonstrated by HS1 as it has delivered increased connectivity, economic growth, sustainability, resilience and placemaking of complex brownfields and deprived areas. More insight and 7 key takeaways in this article.
