Our Ground Engineering team recently spent a day volunteering at the Lancashire Mining Museum helping clear vegetation to create an orchard. Given the connection to the legacy of mining in their day job, the museum was the perfect place for them to volunteer. After their vegetation clearance work was done, they took advantage of the opportunity to see the working steam winding engine and speak with a retired miner who is now volunteering at the museum. A productive day giving back to their local community, bonding as team and learning about an element of history that has a real impact on their work today. Quite a few of them are already planning to make a return visit to the museum with their families! #design #engineering #projectdelivery #CSR #responsiblebusiness #volunteering #groundengineering

EU licensed business advisor and executive coach, working across Europe, with a focus on sustainability, strategy and people - and ideally linking all three.
What a great initiative from the Society for the Environment (SocEnv). Almost half of all life on this planet is in the soil and yet we hardly understand what’s going on - or what we are doing to it. Sustainability is rightly moving to the top of the agenda, but beyond that lies Regeneration, a space occupied by only the most forward leaning amongst us. I’m optimistic that in the years ahead the shift from ‘not getting worse’ to ‘always improving’ will take place (at least on some parts of the planet). Roll on. This project provides one opportunity to do so; sharing in case it works for you. WARNING: SOCIAL VALUE OPPORTUNITY>>> Calling local ecologists, our 43rd Bristol Scout Group needs your help! Our team led by Charles Elderton gained planning permission at the end of '21 for a new hut designed by Will Jones. We are now moving towards the discharge of pre-commencement conditions, two of which we need the input of an ecologist. So, can you help? The hut is in a state of total disrepair. In true scouting style its structural integrity is maintained by some crafty use of string, gaffer tape, bluetak and zip ties. A temporary structure that was built pre-WW1 down at Avonmouth, it was shipped to its current location in BS9 during the 60's where it has served its time (and some) as our local Scout Hut. But the sad day has come where we need to find a suitably robust hut to follow in its predecessor's legacy. For more info on the planning application here https://lnkd.in/ec_c62MQ Application ref: 21/06529/F WHAT IF YOU'RE NOT AN ECOLOGIST I HEAR YOU CRY??? Well, there is still lots to do! With fundraising led by Carolyn Jenkins we have secured £330k so far but need to be heading towards £400k. Any donations of labour, materials or money would be greatly received. Drop me a message if you, or someone you know, could help. Equally drop by our Total Giving page if you or your company may want to make a donation. Every penny really does count 😊 SM43 Scouts Page - https://lnkd.in/e-EBYjGV Total Giving - https://lnkd.in/eMssyUcg #Ecology #Community #SocialValue

At Barrick, we prioritize responsible mining through community-led decision-making. Our tool for implementing our community development vision is the Community Development Committee — or CDC — which we establish at every operation. ⭐ A CDC is an elected group from the community whose role it is to allocate the mine’s community independent investment budget to projects aligned with community priorities and needs. ⭐ Each CDC is made up of a mix of local leaders as well as representatives from women, youth and disadvantaged groups in the community. ⭐ Each site’s community investment budget is decided annually on a needs and projects basis, and is driven by the CDC. ⭐ To reinforce community ownership and engagement with projects, we work to ensure communities and patrons are invested themselves, either through contribution of funding, time, resources or land. We also seek to amplify the benefit of projects by engaging with local entrepreneurs and labourers to undertake the work. See more in our new Sustainability Report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ednAhUq

Free on 19th of October? It's that time again. Community day #3 is upon us. Come and join us, absolutely no experience required, a warm and welcoming rewilding community awaits! 🤗. Main focus: Complete planting of the Tiny Forest using the Miyawaki method to create a densely planted, biodiverse forest with native species. (Project supported by a Welsh Government grant, serving as an outdoor classroom for education activities). Over 400 trees to plant within an area the size of a tennis court, fostering a strong community atmosphere. Alternative activities include: - Winter Shelter Construction: Build shelters for insects, reptiles, and rodents using clay land drains. - Tree Maintenance: Check trees planted in March, remove weeds and grasses, and add mulch if needed. - Fence Removal: A more physical task, important for enhancing the sense of ‘wildness’ on site. There are over 450,000 brownfield sites in the U.S., mostly in communities of color and low-income areas, just waiting to be transformed into thriving community spaces! ✅ But transforming a brownfield into a community center, maker spaces, playgrounds, and parks, is no easy feat. It does not happen overnight, and certainly not alone. ✅ If you’re wondering how this process works, take a look at our Brown to Blooming guide, which walks you through the many steps and considerations involved in taking a brownfield-to-open space project from inception to reality. https://lnkd.in/g4rd6sMK #brownfields #landreuse

Salvage assessments are a crucial method to ensure resource-efficient demolitions and renovations, and they are shamefully underutilized. Salvage assessments are conducted on an existing building to identify the building materials that are reusable, accessible, and cost-effective to recover during deconstruction. If these materials are identified and a plan to recover them is in place, a construction project occurring where there was an existing building can minimize waste, GHG emissions, and cost. Why Do Salvage Assessments Matter? 1️⃣ Educated Decisions: Salvage assessments allow a building owner to understand and therefore make educated decisions about what materials are worth salvaging from an existing building up for demolition or renovation. Understanding the environmental, time, and cost implications of certain levels of salvage allows a project to accurately plan their deconstruction efforts, in turn avoiding unforeseen delays or costs while ensuring they meet their environmental targets. 2️⃣ Cost Efficiency: Beyond its environmental benefits, salvage assessments make economic sense. Reusing salvaged materials can lead to cost savings for construction projects. Whether it's repurposing timber, bricks, or fixtures, integrating salvaged components can reduce the need for new purchases and lower overall project costs. 3️⃣ Community Engagement: Salvage assessments foster community engagement by creating opportunities for donations or sales of salvaged materials. Local charities, community projects, or individuals may find value in repurposing salvaged items, strengthening community ties and promoting a culture of sustainability. Deconstruction is also a growing field of work which has previously been part of education programs for underprivileged groups, helping these groups move out of poverty. ⭕ In the ever-evolving landscape of a #circulareconomy, salvage assessments will become a cornerstone. 🏗️ Salvage assessments and subsequent deconstruction are a forward-thinking approach to building demolition that not only reduce waste and environmental impact but also align with cost-effective and community-engaged business goals. ♻️ By conducting salvage assessments and determining optimal levels of deconstruction for their projects, we can pave the way for a more responsible and resource-efficient construction industry. #buildcircular #constructionmanagement #netzero #wastemanagement #climateaction #decarbonization #circularity #builtenvironment

This Sunday, May 26th, I'll be back on my Canyon Bicycles GmbH steed to ride the 100+ miles of the Ride London-Essex sportive for Heal Rewilding of which I'm a charity Trustee. The reason I’m doing this is to give land back to nature, forever. It’s vital a because the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, ranking 189th for biodiversity. This matters with 41% of animal species in decline and 1 in 10 UK species threatened with extinction. But times are currently tough for many so this year, rather than just asking for a donation, I want to give you a little bit of Somerset in return. Your money will sponsor a real piece of land at the 460-acre Heal foundation site. We’ve mapped the site with what3words and you can put your name to a 3x3 metre square piece of the West Country which we'll randomly allocate to you to help us bring back life through rewilding. The £20 sponsorship fee helps us to buy the land outright. Your sponsorship will last for a year and will continue for as long as you're happy to pay the small annual upkeep fee of £3. The upkeep fee helps us to safeguard the land in the long-term. It will fund essential maintenance costs such as veterinary fees for free-roaming animals and the maintenance of fences, paths and gates. You can sponsor multiple squares or give one as a gift. If you are feeling generous then you can sponsor a square for life for a one-off cost. You are welcome to visit Heal Somerset anytime, the site is open 24/7, at no cost. The team will be happy to welcome you and share how your donation is making a difference. All you have to do is to go to is click below and choose your option. Thanks (and our newly arrived wild beavers say thanks too)! https://lnkd.in/d65qDSv #healrewilding #rewilding #biodiversity #nature #somerset #what3words #sponsorship #ridelondonessex #extinction #globalwarming #climatecrisis #londonclassics
