Photography brings me as much joy as the cocktails I create. Thank you to Garden & Gun Magazine for featuring (and crediting) my cocktail photos. I can’t tell you how often I’ve had to advocate for myself in the publication space. Many of my images have been used without permission or even credited to other artists. In the culinary world, images depicting dishes or drinks are much easier to legally protect than the recipes themselves. When speaking up about the misidentification, or lack there of, I would be labeled as a “trouble maker,” “power-hungry,“ or gaslit into believing fair representation didn’t matter, because the business or the brand’s reputation were more important. Let me tell you—in the age of personal branding—this DOES matter. I’ve had support in the past, too. I’ve been encouraged to pursue the inaccuracies and speak up. There’s been cooperation and understanding; where issues were immediately resolved with a click of a mouse. The difference here? I had get uncomfortable. I had to start the conversation and do it on my own. I had to reclaim ownership of my own artistry and content. The support came from the back of the room, from “advice” given in passing. No one opened the door for me. I opened the door myself. An Interesting Week of Whisky Education!!! 🥃 I had a fantastic weekend in England's Western Lake District staying at the gorgeous The Wayside and Whisky Barn. A beautiful 17th century house with its own whisky room holding over 160 whiskies to sample. So I've obviously had to come home with a couple of new additions to my whisky collection. I've only been drinking whisky for a year, I used to like gins and ended up with a decent size collection of around 30 bottles. But then I decided in 2022 to give up alcohol for a year, which went on to being 18 months in the end. The strange thing is when I did go back to drinking I'd actually gone off gin altogether, how weird is that? So a friend got me to try whisky, and that was me converted. 🥃 I'm slowly beginning to understand what I like and what I don't. I do prefer a non-peaty whisky, one that's darker in colour usually from a sherry cask or red wine cask, with dried fruit undertones, basically I like whisky that tastes and looks like Christmas cake 😂. These two are both sherry cask, dark in colour, cask strength too at 52% and 56%, the Glenturrett bottle is gorgeous, very heavy, it's like a crystal cut glass. So that's me spent up on whisky for a while after a couple of days of tasting 12 and 18 year old single malts. It was really fun learning and discovering different tastes, especially when the owner of the whisky barn was so knowledgeable and took all the fancy talk and mystery away. I think I'll now be able to confidently buy a slightly more expensive whisky knowing that I'll like the taste and it suits my preferences.
