Our report on Risks Related to Emerging and Disruptive Transportation Technologies is out! Conventional risk assessments consider the severity and likelihood of an incident occurring. However, when it comes to emerging and disruptive technologies, determining the likelihood of potential risks can be challenging due to the lack of historical data. In our project for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), we developed an agile/adaptive risk management framework to assist transportation agencies, state Departments of Transportation (DOTs), and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) in managing risks associated with the adoption of emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. We also used this framework to develop a risk register for four transportation technologies: Electric Vehicles, Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Mobility on Demand (MoD)/Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and Advanced Air Mobility. #EVs #emergingtechnologies #advancedairmobility #modmaas #transportationtechnologies #NCHRP #TRB #RAND
I'm happy to share that a RAND report has been published on the risks from emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. Steven Popper, Hye Min Park, Zara Fatima Abdurahaman, Jalal Awan, Joe Iacobucci, Sydney Maves, Adam Cohen, and I completed the work for The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). In the report, we review the risks posed by four transportation technologies: #electricvehicles, #autonomousvehicles, #modmaas, and #advancedairmobility. We also provide an adaptive risk register framework for cataloguing and tracking risks over time. #mobilityondemand #mobilityasaservice #airtaxi #robotaxi #driverlessvehicles #EVs #transportation #Nationalacademies #NCHRP #BEVs https://lnkd.in/gHnWHjeA

Reflecting on the AWARD-H2020 Project Sam Wood, our segment leader for industrial automation, attended the final consortium meeting in Brussels last week to discuss lessons learned and review what the project had delivered. As a result of the AWARD-H2020 project, we are proud to have developed the RAS3 sensor, a compact, cost-effective, high-resolution radar designed for autonomous industrial vehicle applications. Through AWARD-H2020, we learned that adverse weather, like snow and rain, poses significant challenges for autonomous outdoor logistics. Our high-resolution radar technology proved critical in ensuring all-weather driving capability: taking proposals from pilots, to real-world, commercially viable applications. As we finalise production plans and work with early adopters, we look forward to growing the relationships we've formed through the project and realising the benefits of autonomous outdoor logistics. RAD Propulsion is busy working on our latest industrial research project, RAD Box (Last Blue Mile) – TRIG23. This industrial research initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenges of last-mile delivery in the UK. As roads become increasingly congested and air quality declines, our project aims to develop an automated, clean, electric marine system to complete the final stage of delivery on the water. By strategically utilising waterways, we seek to alleviate congestion, reduce CO2 emissions, and enhance air quality. As we embark on this six-month feasibility study, aiming to develop last-mile delivery through the innovative use of autonomous surface vessels (ASVs), our goal is to develop a working prototype, powered by our RAD 40 drive technology. This hopes to demonstrate the viability of this solution in real-world scenarios, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in delivery logistics. #RADBox #LastMileDelivery #Sustainability #RADPropulsion

#TUDelft and #CROW have investigated the interactions between human drivers and automated vehicles in mixed traffic in the #SAMEN project, which is essential for a transition to fully automated driving. The project focused primarily on driving behavior, and the scientific results have been published in academic journals. A brandnew CROW publication produced by Marco Van Burgsteden (CROW) translates the scientific insights into practical applications for professionals, such as road authorities and driving education providers. With input from CROW, #RDW, and #Rijkswaterstaat, a systematic approach has been followed according to the CROW #assetmanagementmodel, aimed at #health, #safety, the #environment, and #accessibility. The document discusses a 'line of sight' for safe driving with automated vehicles in mixed traffic, based on existing ADAS applications, and offers possibilities for further improvement based on the SAMEN research. #SmartMobility #authonomousdriving #CCAM Many thanks to the project team: Supervisory team: Haneen Farah, Serge Hoogendoorn and Bart van Arem PhD Candidates: Nagarjun Reddy, Yongqi DONG and Yiyun W. Revolutionizing Logistics with Innovations in High-Speed Rail In the ever-evolving landscape of the logistics industry, the development of high-speed rail (HSR) systems stands out as a transformative force aimed at enhancing the efficiency and frequency of transportation for both people and goods. HSR involves not only the design and construction of high-speed trains and lines but also the adaptation of existing infrastructure and the innovation of ground-breaking systems like hyperloop, capable of surpassing speeds of 1000 km per hour. One pioneering player in this realm is the Spanish start-up Zeleros, which is making waves with its electric-powered autonomous hyperloop vehicles and infrastructure. These cutting-edge vehicles utilize active magnetic levitation technology and an electric aerodynamic propulsion system, minimizing the need for linear motors along the track. Zeleros is not merely envisioning the future of transportation but actively shaping it with an electromagnetic launcher that optimizes the vehicle's range. Meanwhile, the Polish start-up NEVOMO is carving its niche with a magnetic rail system boasting speeds of up to 550 km per hour. Employing passive magnetic levitation and linear motor technology, NEVOMO's trains can seamlessly operate on existing tracks alongside conventional counterparts, demonstrating a commitment to innovation while preserving compatibility with established infrastructure. As NEVOMO explores plans for hyper-rail and hyperloop technologies, the logistics industry eagerly anticipates the transformative potential of these high-speed advancements. In the race to redefine transportation, these start-ups exemplify the ingenuity and forward-thinking spirit propelling the logistics industry into a faster, more interconnected future. #HighSpeedRailInnovation #LogisticsRevolution #FutureTransportation #HyperloopTechnology #InnovativeRailSystems
