If you're an Apple fan like me then you know that they have always done things their way and there was very little we as users could do to change that.
I'm talking about the limitations iOS has when customising your device's home screen layout, colours and fonts. Until now. And for once I disagree with them.
Apple products are renowned for their seamless functionality. They feel comfortable and intuitive, no matter what others might say. This is largely because Apple believes that what they create is the best in the world, and in most cases, they're right. Giving users the freedom to change this seems counterintuitive to maintaining a consistent and perfect user experience (yes, I'm an Apple fanboy).
It started with Widgets, which, to be fair, have been a nice addition. But now, users can place icons anywhere on the screen and change the colour profile of everything. Maybe I'm overanalysing this, but don't these changes impact scannability, reducing the speed at which you can find your app? What about brands that invest heavily in designing the perfect icon for easy identification? Users could be negatively impacting their own user experience and detracting from the beautiful work the Apple design team does.
You don't unlock your phone to admire the pretty background and then hunt for your app; you open it to get something done quickly.
Sure, you can choose not to use these options, but in conclusion, my issue is that Apple has broken from a tradition that made sense to me. This move makes all smartphones just a little bit more alike, and I feel this is a diversion from the distinctive approach that sets Apple apart.
