As another IWD rolls by, now more than ever, I'm aware of the impact we can all make on the next generation to promote the engineering and construction industry.
I believe we need to start young and show kids that these opportunities are available to everyone, regardless of gender. If you have a chance to talk to young children, let them know the vast array of jobs that the construction industry has to offer. It's such a great industry to work in and I've had some amazing experiences.
If you want to help share the message with some young girls in your life, these are some great books we love to read:
* Roadworks by Sally Sutton
* This girl built that by Emma Wallace
* I want to be an engineer by Samantha Dungey
Construction is one of the most exciting and engaging industries to work in, but it can at times have its challenges.
To celebrate Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day, we teamed up with the National Association of Women in Construction (AU) (NAWIC NSW) to find out what the construction industry can do to continue creating an environment for women to thrive 👷🏻♀️
NAWIC spoke with our team on the M6 Stage 1 project about what the sector can do to not only attract women, but retain and support them throughout their careers. We wholeheartedly commend the Township of Huron-Kinloss for their investment of $445,275 in the Women in Construction program.
This initiative echoes our commitment to bridging the skills and gender gap in the construction industry.
By equipping women with hands-on skills and certifications, it not only breaks down barriers but also opens doors to fulfilling careers in construction.
This investment reflects a crucial step towards fostering diversity and inclusion within the workforce.
We're elated to see these steps taken in the right direction. Progress like this emboldens us to continue our efforts in safety education, emphasizing that skills know no gender.
As a woman-owned company dedicated to safety education in construction, we proudly stand beside initiatives fostering inclusivity.
Happy to see where this development takes us!

Women in the construction trades make up less than 4 percent of craft professional positions. NCCER interviewed 176 current tradeswomen and surveyed 770 women in field and administration positions. In her presentation, "In Her Own Words: Improving Project Outcomes," Jennifer Wilkerson of NCCER reported the results of their research including the unique benefits that women bring to the construction craft workforce, the obstacles they encounter getting in and staying in the industry, and recommendations on what contractors can do to recruit and retain more women.

It is constantly in the news that the global construction industry is facing a problem: a shortage of skilled workers. 🚧👷♂️👷♀️
And the gender gap - the number of females pursuing a construction career - is only exacerbating the issue.
That's where nonprofits like the Colorado-based T&C Girl come in. They're working to inspire more young women to pursue careers in the trades, providing them with the skills, support, and mentorship they need to succeed.
This interesting news article touches on the need for organisations such as these to exist and the activities that can make a difference.

Overview: As part of its Million Women in Construction initiative, on May 21, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a new call to action to increase women’s participation in the construction industry: the Million Women in Construction Community Pledge. Secretary of commerce Gina Raimondo is calling for an industrywide commitment to invest in solutions and strategies that help women and underserved communities overcome barriers to entering the field.

#DYK that in the last 12 months, employment in Construction amongst young people was up 8.7% nationally? ⬆️ Moreover, young women's employment jumped by 30.5%, showing record participation in the construction industry!
🤔 What do you think? Is the industry doing enough to continually attract and (more importantly) retain young people?

Today I participated in an insightful discussion at the Women in Construction, Engineering and Infrastructure Summit 2024. As a panelist in the CEO session on "Fostering an Inclusive and Respectful Culture," I found the exchange of ideas with fellow leaders to be both valuable and thought-provoking.
Key takeaways:
- The power of diverse perspectives in driving innovation
- Strategies for creating truly inclusive workplaces
- The importance of mentorship and sponsorship for women in our industry
A personal highlight was sharing an anecdote that perfectly encapsulates why this work matters: My young son recently asked if, as a man, he could one day become a CEO like his mum. It was a poignant reminder that representation changes perceptions for all.
My call to action: Let's amplify empathy and equality in our workplaces. When we see each individual as inherently valuable, we unlock unprecedented potential.
Thank you to the summit organizers and all participants. Your commitment to positive change is truly inspiring.
What steps are you taking to foster inclusivity in your organization? Let's continue this crucial conversation and drive meaningful progress together.

On International Women’s Day, when it comes to topic of women in construction, sadly it is still very much a case that the industry is rather like this Fast Show sketch, written and starring Arabella Weir, first broadcast way back in 1994.
The historic stereotypes of construction being a male dominated sector, unfortunately, persist and the industry still lags dramatically in terms of gender parity: the UK construction workforce was only 15.8 per cent female in April to June 2023.
This is extremely frustrating, because construction is an industry where gender parity is particularly important for the long term “good” of what we do. It is still the case that buildings and infrastructure and cities and all of the projects that we are involved with are built for men, and it has been proven on a number of occasions that women’s needs are rarely considered from planning to building to finishing. This needs to change.
This is not to say that things aren’t already improving. They are. In fact, thanks to excellent organizations such as Women into Construction CIC and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) UK & Ireland (and the people involved with them), things are improving rapidly. That 15.8 per cent figure is the highest amount ever, and the general culture of the industry is changing for the good. Perhaps not as quickly as we want, but it’s just about starting to get there.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that we at CNQS firmly believe in the positive action of the above organizations, and the industry as a whole; and take genuine (and not just box ticking) steps to also do this. As we expand, this will be a significant part of our hiring and development policies going forward and we know we will be a better business because of it.
