Fleet Footed Falcon of the Shaheen's (50/40 Years of Falcon / Shaheen in the Skies) No it is not about cricket I am sure many of my readers must have thought so, I don’t blame them. While others may be saying our Shaheen is not fleet footed these days (baby faced yes) so this piece couldn’t be about Shaheen of cricket (I am he too will be up and about soon). The men and women of Pakistan Air Force are also referred to as Shaheens (as in plural). This piece of writing is to commemorate 50 years of a Falcon and 40 years of a Shaheen, the F-16 Fighting Falcon as I saw it in the sky and on the radar screens over the years. I am not a pilot and naturally I haven’t flown it, however, I was a fighter controller so here I am referring to my experiences as a person trying to control a fighter aircraft. However, before I do that I would like to recall the arrival of this flamboyant Shaheen in the skies over Sargodha. My Dad was posted in Sargodha, it was summer of 1984 and we all knew they were coming, four of them and we knew when because my Dad had told us already. I had this nasty ability in those days of climbing to the roof top of virtually every house we had ever lived in during those days in Air Force, it was like a new challenge every 1-2 years. Anyways I knew the time and I knew the climb to top of the house all too well. And then it happened, against the back drop of clear blue sky four of them in a tight formation must be at 2-3 thousand and I was at forty!!!. When we were undergoing operational training we would sometimes get to control them, a pair would give us 20-24 intercepts at FL 160-200. The first time I heard R/T of a Falcon was a day I still remember, it was loud, clear and crispy. Performing intercepts between two platforms requires precision and these guys and their planes gave us precisely that. But this did not end here, as I grew in service I got to do much more complex and sophisticated combat missions on this platform. While I can’t say a lot about tactics as they might bore my reader (I could but then I would have to kill you as Maverick would say), what I can tell you is that if one was scheduled to conduct a mission in which Falcon was against you it was going to a long de-brief for you. I have to briefly talk about the man behind this machine. Getting a machine is one thing having the men to fly it right is another. The defence of our skies depends on so many such falcons and eagles, however, it is the Shaheens “The Men in Blue” who truly make it happen. I am so proud to say that I have rubbed shoulders with the men who flew and controlled this machine to it’s ultimate limits while flying it and while controlling it. As a fighter controller who has had a fair share of actually witnessing what this machine can do, I feel very lucky to have known the Falcon the way I did. Happy landings to my alter ego!
