Landmarks The #Palisades and #Eaton infernos have devastated the region, destroying over 30 historic structures in what preservationists are calling the single worst loss of such properties in Southern California’s history. The number of lost landmarks could grow significantly as the damage continues to be assessed. While institutions like the Getty Villa were saved, the fate of other notable sites remains uncertain. Among these are several influential mid-century Case Study Houses, built under the sponsorship of Arts & Architecture magazine. Confirmed losses include Altadena’s Zane Grey Estate and the Western-style home of Rogers in the Palisades, both of which held formal landmark status on the National Register of Historic Places. However, the fires also claimed many cherished community spaces, including Fox’s Restaurant in Altadena, Theatre Palisades, Moonshadows, and The Reel Inn—places that were integral to their neighborhoods as cultural and social hubs. 2024 FRA Award Winner - Out of the Box - Small City City of Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency - Flight of the Spoonbills "Palmetto has a long-standing commitment to the preservation of its wildlife, and is, in fact, a bird sanctuary. With their striking pink feathers, Roseate Spoonbills were hunted to near extinction during the 1800s for decorating women’s hats and clothes. In celebration of Palmetto’s newest environmental park, the Community Redevelopment Agency’s CCNA design team was charged with creating a sculpture that captured the importance of Connor Park to Palmetto’s bird and wildlife population. From this request, “Flight of the Spoonbills”, a sculpture that celebrates the City of Palmetto’s devotion to enhancing our environment through projects like Connor Park, was created." About the FRA Roy F. Kenzie Awards Program: The Florida Redevelopment Association Awards program recognizes the best in redevelopment in Florida. It is open to any member of the Association. To recognize the projects and people involved in redevelopment throughout the state, three awards series have been established. The Roy F. Kenzie and Thomas J. Mills Awards are given for outstanding examples of redevelopment and leadership, respectively, in Florida. Additionally, the President’s Award is given for the “Best of the Best,” to honor the top project across all categories. A winning entry acknowledges excellence in an organization’s work. Within 13 juried categories, the Roy F. Kenzie Awards celebrate the most innovative and effective redevelopment programs in Florida. Exploring the Layers of Fairbourne’s History ✨ Fairbourne, a village with a remarkable story, reflects how human resilience and natural forces intertwine. From its establishment by Solomon Andrews in the late 1800s to its modern-day challenges with rising sea levels, every chapter in its history shapes its present and future. 🔍 Understanding Fairbourne’s history was a key step in my thesis. Why? Because history is the foundation of design. It reveals how a place evolved, how people adapted, and what challenges have been overcome. For example: • In the 1950s, Fairbourne thrived as a seaside resort. • By the 20th century, concerns over erosion and flooding became prominent, leading to government plans for evacuation by 2054. McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd share the news that construction work has officially commenced on The R&A’s new Global Headquarters at St Andrews West. “David Rickman MBE had the honour of breaking ground using a special 1890s Bogey hole cutter provided by The R&A World Golf Museum for the ceremonial turnover of soil as work on the foundations of the project begins. What to do with declining, vacant, and underutilized historic church buildings is an issue that many communities across the country are facing. For congregations with dwindling membership, the wall of maintenance costs is often insurmountable. Constructed in 1913, the historic St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church and its members were faced with this dilemma in the early 2000s. As a center of Tampa's Civil Rights Movement, St. Paul played host to numerous dignitaries, including Thurgood Marshall and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but the building was suffering from years of deferred maintenance. From the sale of the church in 2011, the congregation was able to move across town to a newer, smaller, and more affordable space, however, ensuring that the building's future use would preserve the building's character and legacy was vital. Ensuring this goal, Sage Partners, LLC was able to transform the historic sacred space into a Life Center, complete with an indoor play area, computer lab, and event space, while constructing an adjoining 120-unit affordable housing community. In the end, the congregation was sustained, the building's integrity and legacy were preserved, and a community need for affordable housing was met. Talk about a win-win-win!
