Snowed In: A Winter Story from 1992 ❄️🐾 Building Stronger Communities Through Small Deeds When I was younger, I had an 83-year-old neighbor who needed help shoveling snow to get from her house to her garage, which was her canning room. Almost every day, I’d grab my shovel and create a clear pathway through the snow—some of the drifts towered above my waist by the time winter was over. Her way of thanking me? A jar of her incredible home-canned peaches. I’ll tell you what—those peaches were the sweetest payment I’ve ever received, and to this day, they remain a reminder of what kindness can accomplish. I didn’t shovel for the reward, though. I did it because helping others brings people together. It builds trust, connection, and the kind of strong communities we need—especially in times of crisis. Whether it’s assisting a neighbor, donating time to a local charity, or lending a hand during tough times—a small deed can make a world of difference. Humans have marked Winter solstice (the longest night of the year) for millenia, looking forward with hope to brighter days. For people doing it tough, a period of homelessness really can be "the longest night". On Winter solstice (20 June) Tessa van Duyn and I will spend a night out in the cold to raise funds for people who are homeless or at risk. Vinnies provides food, clothing and support, but (more importantly) Vinnies provides hope during what can be a dark time. There were 1,178 overall attendances at Spires from April-June. 266 different people received support from Spires through that period. Here are some of the main outcomes we achieved: 🏠 56 people received housing support - 14 people supported into permanent or temporary accommodation. - 11 people provided with pre-emptive tenancy sustainment support. 👨⚕️ 29 people received health support - 10 people supported to attend a health appointment. - 11 people supported to engage with our Mental health support team. 💷 29 people offered benefits support - 8 people who have started to receive benefits. - 16 people helped to maintain benefits We have raised just over £500 in the first week of our crowdfunding campaign, but we need much more to continue achieving outcomes like these.
