They Come in Threes Ok. Apparently, human beings have lost the capability of successfully navigating the earth's waterways resulting in two reported collisions of ships with bridges inside a week. First Responders had better dust off their playbook for this scenario. The incident in Baltimore allowed officers 90 seconds to respond. They did so by blocking vehicular traffic, in turn saving countless lives. Having one critical event like this is an anomaly. Two represents a repeat. Emergency Management teams should carefully look into both the Oklahoma and Baltimore mishaps during an aftermath assessment with nothing being taken off the table. On May 11, 2021, inspectors from Michael Baker International discovered a fracture in the Hernando de Soto Bridge during a routine inspection. This bridge is crucial for transportation, commerce, and defense, carrying about 60,000 vehicles daily. The inspectors immediately contacted local authorities to shut down all traffic for safety. A three-phase emergency repair plan was implemented. Phase 1 involved temporary stabilization plating and was completed by May 25, 2021. Phase 2 used post-tensioning and bolting repairs, finishing by July 3, 2021. Phase 3 addressed additional defects and was completed by July 31, 2021. All lanes were reopened by August 2, 2021. This year marks the three-year anniversary of the bridge's reopening. Learn more about the emergency repair process in the video below. #BridgeRepair #Infrastructure #EmergencyResponse #EngineeringExcellence
