I am happy to announce that our research article has been published in the prestigious Environmental DNA journal! This work represents a significant step forward in the field of environmental DNA (eDNA) research. Environmental DNA is a powerful tool for assessing biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems, but the challenges of water collection, sample preservation, and onsite filtration often hinder its application. In our study, we explored an innovative approach to address these issues by testing the use of three cationic surfactants—benzalkonium chloride (BAC), cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)—to preserve eDNA in water samples. These results offer a cost-effective and efficient solution to protect eDNA in water samples, making its extraction more reliable and practical for environmental monitoring. I am incredibly grateful to my mentors, colleagues, and everyone who supported this research journey. This milestone is a reminder of the importance of innovation and persistence in addressing real-world challenges. Looking forward to continuing my contributions to the scientific community and advancing solutions that benefit society. Hi, I'm Qihui Zhao, a Research Assistant at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution👩🔬, where I collaborate with the "Global Estuary Monitoring (GEM) Program" research team. With a strong academic background in environmental engineering and ecology, my past work has primarily focused on ecological footprint analysis and environmental pollution remediation.🏭 As part of the GEM program, my main responsibility involves detecting and analysing pharmaceutical residues in estuary samples. Historically, one of the key challenges in studying global estuary pollution has been the lack of standardized sampling and detection methods, which made it difficult to compare pollution levels across different regions.🏞️This project has provided me with a unique opportunity to collect and analyze estuarine samples from multiple countries using standardized methodologies. This approach enables more accurate monitoring and a deeper understanding of changes in pollutant levels on a global scale.🌏🔍 🌊 "I use my knowledge and skills to restore polluted environments, just like a doctor heals a patient, and my patient is nature."

"Ecologically, experiments may fail to mimic key properties of natural systems, thus reducing their predictive utility outside of controlled settings. Additionally, these experiments are often located within functioning ecosystems that provide a constant stream of ecosystem services from the landscape, and thus, the results may be strongly context dependent". https://lnkd.in/dWFXu3gV

Press release! Experts available for Interviews on the IPBES Nexus Assessment! ✍ The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) will publish two significant assessments in December. To assist media coverage, we are providing a list of IPBES authors available for interviews regarding the nexus assessment and its European perspective. ✅ The nexus assessment: - Explores the interconnectedness of biodiversity, water, food, and health in the context of climate change, also called the nexus. - Examines how these elements relate to the sustainable development goals, particularly in the realms of food and water security, universal health, biodiversity protection, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. This comprehensive assessment features contributions from 165 expert authors worldwide, including researchers involved in the BIONEXT project, coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). BIONEXT experts available for interviews: Paula Harrison (UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) Hans Keune (University of Antwerp) Soile Kulmala (Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) - Suomen ympäristökeskus (Syke)) Zuzana Harmáčková (CzechGlobe) Mark Rounsevell (mark.rounsevell@kit.edu; Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)) Elizabeth Noemí Díaz-General (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)) The expert list with all details and more information about the role of BIONEXT 👉 https://lnkd.in/d7PEFyGH #BiodiversityNexus #PressRelease #Nexus #IPBES #TransformativeChange #NexusAssessment
