Let's talk best ways to ensure good ROI on promotional products Typically, once a promotional product has hit a consumers hands, it falls into one of three life cycles. 1. Immediately discarded - Either into the trash, or into the void of the "kitchen junk drawer" only to be seen again 6 years later when you're hunting for a AAA battery. 2. Kept and used, but with low exposure - Think USB drives, very useful but small and generally kept out of view. 3. Kept and used, with high visibility - This is the honey hole, but it needs to be earned. How do we earn our place in that third category though? Forbes gives three critical components; Quality, Story, and Impact. Quality is clear cut. Whatever item you put a logo on will represent your brand when you aren't around to do so. Quality, long lasting, and useful products reinforce those same characteristics in the users mind, with your logo in association. The story in this case goes two ways. What story is the item telling about your brand, and how does your brand and this item fit into a customers story? Impact is a little harder to directly quantify, but objectively the most important part of it all. You can generally tell if your merch is making an impact by the reactions you get at the point of interaction. Good merch will spark comments and conversation, and generate impressions over the long term. Long story short, promotional products are not all created equal and every customer segment should be evaluated separately to ensure the best ROI. More than a century ago the merchant John Wanamaker wryly complained, “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted. The trouble is, I don’t know which half.” In this article the authors present a solution to Wanamaker’s famous quandary. Drawing on a large database supplied by the World Advertising Research Council to empirically identify what kinds of brand advertising are most effective—both for attracting new customers and for converting them into loyal repeaters—they show that the key to successful brand building is offering a memorable, valuable, and deliverable promise to the customer. What’s more, a well-designed customer promise not only translates directly into sales but also provides an effective framework around which to organize a company’s activities.
