Cougar Infrastructure Project Update! 🚧 Exciting progress is being made on the Cougar Infrastructure Project. Key activities include the installation of storm water covers and frames, which are crucial for effective drainage management. In addition, the installation of kerbstones is underway, followed by haunching work to ensure stability and alignment. The laying of aggregate subbase is also in progress, providing a strong foundation for the upcoming road layers. Beach renourishment-related operations have begun, both on land and in the water. This project will see 1.5 million cubic yards of beach-grade sand dredged from the shoreline of the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) just north of Port Canaveral’s harbor entrance and moved southward onto the City’s beach. To help do this, engineers have installed what is called a booster station about 1,500 feet offshore the northern end of the City. This booster station (called Reggie (yes, that is its actual name)) will help “boost” (i.e., pump) dredged sand southward down the shoreline via a metal pipe and onto the beach to be spread out by work crews. Boaters, please be cautious of offshore construction activities. This booster station will remain in place throughout the duration of the project. A second booster station named Jack will be arriving later this month and will be placed south of the City offshore of Cocoa Beach to help push sand to the project’s “Segment 2” area between N. 2nd Street and Tables Beach. 🌊 Water Industry News: Contract Agreement with Thames Water 🌊 Barhale has secured a £14.8 million contract with Thames Water to rehabilitate sections of the historic New River, one of London’s oldest water infrastructure assets. What you need to know: 🎯 This vital project will target areas in Hornsey and Waltham Cross to prevent leakage and extend the waterway's lifespan. 💪 They will be using a state-of-the-art Giken sheet piling system to strengthen the northern side of the waterway, minimizing noise and disturbance for the community. 🔎 Their innovative approach includes deploying pontoon barges for equipment access and silt excavation, ensuring they navigate the New River's constrained path efficiently. ⚒ At Waltham Cross, they will install sheet piling along a 1.1km stretch, reaching the impermeable London Clay to prevent water leakage. The gap between new and old piles will be filled with pea gravel for added stability. 🌍 Additionally, they are taking significant measures to protect the local ecology, including the use of a bubble curtain to prevent silt debris dispersal and to discourage fauna from approaching the works. 🤝 Barhale continues its relationship with Thames Water to collaborate on this essential refurbishment project, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of this historic waterway. On Antwerp's Left Bank, the final section of the old dike, which separates the river Scheldt from the Scheldetunnel, is being excavated. Once this section is removed, the first tunnel element will be fully underwater! This marks another major step in the Oosterweel project, which will complete the Antwerp ring road. To protect the first tunnel section on the Left Bank from the strong currents of the Scheldt, the site was carefully flooded last month. 400 meters of the old dike are excavated to make way for the arrival of the first tunnel element later this year from the construction yard in Zeebrugge. This element will be linked to the existing section on the Left Bank by summer 2025. Additionally, a new, higher dike has been constructed 300 meters inland, offering improved flood protection while also creating 24 hectares of tidal nature - roughly the size of 34 soccer fields. Murphy Geospatial have supported Irish Rail throughout their journey to developing a systematic risk-based bridge scour inspection programme. Murphy Geospatial surveyors were on site the day after the bridge collapse to survey the extent of the damage using bathymetric survey either side of the bridge, and laser scanning technology that was emerging at the time. We also installed a digital monitoring system with bespoke tilt sensors to ensure the remaining spans were not also showing signs of unexpected movement. We assisted with setting out, and monitoring during the reconstruction phase in the months after the collapse. Since then, we have undertaken 2000+ bridge scour inspections as part of the Level 1 Assessment approach for bridges on 1-, 3- and 6-year inspection cycles. Our surveys have been key to identifying scour defects, monitoring any known scour defects, and enabling decisions for design of bridge scour countermeasures. We look forward to continuing to assist Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail in their digital transformation and the management of risk around their critical infrastructure assets.
