Last month, members of Bancroft Construction Services’ Biology group attended the San Joaquin Valley Natural Communities Conference held in Bakersfield, CA. The conference had a packed day full of quality presentations and discussions, including one from Bancroft’s own Mario Gaytan covering his research on the San Joaquin Valley Giant Flower-Loving fly. It was a great day of networking and learning was had. Do you know what kind of soil data and information is available and how to access it? Even more importantly, does it help in making decisions about land management? We distill 3 steps to turn soil data into actionable knowledge for sustainable land management (SLM): 1️⃣ Determine the purpose of soil information with relevant and compelling arguments to audiences. 2️⃣ Identify the type of soil information that contributes to the desired purpose of SLM. 3️⃣ Apply principles and strategies for facilitating knowledge exchange and engagement with audiences to incorporate reflexive learning. ✅ and embed these in appropriate soil AND knowledge governance arrangements (see our framework diagram). This is based on a comprehensive review of existing public soil databases in the UK and Australia (location, year established, purpose, governing institution, accessibility, digital products available, cycle of assessment, sampling scale, soil data presented, depth of soil assessment). A very enjoyable interdisciplinary collaboration with Dr Lisa Lobry de Bruyn full of questions and discussions. Wanted to share the work our new venture with One Tonne Capital (OTC) is putting out. Two years ago, Dan Arthur, P.E., SPEC, CPG, FGS, QMS opened my eyes to a growing issue beleaguering our aging oil patch. With Big Oil's exit from our Nation's conventional oil and gas fields there has been a surge in the number of orphan, idle and inactive wells assigned to Small Operators and State agencies to manage. As these fields age the mechanical integrity of the well also ages which may cause the potential for numerous safety and environmental issues. Recently, there has been an injection of government money available to State Agencies to address the Orphan well issue, but until now $0 have been made available to the small operator to aid them in the voluntary efforts to accelerate P&A activity in the patch. This year, BCarbon made public the Methane Capture & Reclamation (MCR) Methodology that implements emissions measurement technology, environmental sciences and petroleum reserve engineering to determine accurate baselines in calculating the positive environmental impacts and attributes from the plugging and reclamation of fugitive VOC's leaking from oil and gas wells. The MCR supports the development of real, measurable carbon accounting that can be converted to High-Integrity Voluntary Carbon Credits that are utilized by various Industries in their goal toward a Net Zero business model. Dan and I formed One Tonne Capital to support the Voluntary Carbon Markets by sponsoring the development of high-quality carbon reclamation and removal projects in the energy and agribusiness industries. Our first project provided the funding and expertise to create the Cross Timbers Reclamation Project (CTRP). A project that cleans up and permanently plugs inactive well sites within the 26,000 sq.mi. Cross Timbers and Prairies Region of North Texas. This project will support better environmental conditions for eco-tourism, wildlife, livestock, restoration of grasslands, ground water, air quality and many other Co-Benefits. The CTRP project has successfully generated the very first Carbon Credit issued nationwide using the BCarbon Registry's MCR Methodology for well plugging and site reclamation. We have the potential for thousands of sites within our project AMI. If you are a small operator and in need of capital and advisory services for the voluntary early retirement of an oil and gas asset, please consider One Tonne Capital in your planning decisions.

Timothy Wood and Peter Scaramella are presenting at the 2024 California Land Recycling Conference: From the Ground Up (CALRC), September 17-19 in Carson, California. GSI is a proud Visionary Sponsor and exhibitor at this fifth annual conference hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 9 and the CA Department of Toxic Substances Control’s (DTSC) Office of Brownfields in collaboration with the Center for Creative Land Recycling. Tim is a co-presenter for “What to Expect When You’re Expecting to Work With DTSC’s Voluntary Agreements: Aligning Regulatory Expectations with Consultant Insights for Effective Brownfield Cleanup” on September 18 from 11:45 AM – 12:45 PM. This session on regulatory oversight in brownfield cleanup with be co-presented by DTSC’s Office of Brownfields and will discuss expectations for voluntary agreements and share insights on transforming contaminated sites. Later that same day, Pete will present a timely technical and policy update on “A Balancing Act: Building Affordable Housing on Properties with Low Levels of Soil Vapor VOCs” from 4:55 – 5:10 PM. This talk will discuss the challenges in redeveloping properties with low level soil vapor impacts that are not associated with a traditional “point source,” and the tradeoffs involved with managing vapor intrusion risks, given the inherent uncertainties in the VI pathway. #CALRC #Brownfields #EnvironmentalCleanup #CommunityDevelopment #VaporIntrusion #AffordableHousing #UrbanRedevelopment #SoilVapor #EnvironmentalChallenges #CalEPA #GSIExperts

Great to see the Natural Capital Measurement Catalogue (NCMC) included in Clean Energy Finance Corporation's report 'Measuring what matters: An approach for natural capital investors'. Developed by Climateworks Centre, with support from the Macdoch Foundation, the NCMC aims to provide a consistent reference source for a comprehensive set of natural capital metrics and methods. It's the result of four years working with industry, government, other cross-sectoral stakeholders and experts to create an agreed, evidence-based set of common measures for natural capital that are aligned with international frameworks and locally relevant to Australian land types.

Forest Engineer | Nature-based Solutions | Climate Change | Voluntary Carbon Market | Carbon Credits
We have just published the second post written by the carbon team at hummingbirds, by Angie Lisseth Bernal Torres! We conducted an analysis of the all reforestation projects registered in the Voluntary Carbon Market to understand which aspects they are currently considering. Some questions we tried to answer are: What are the main types of reforestation projects in the VCM? Is biodiversity really taken into account when developing such projects? Is harvesting a common practice? If so, how? Check our blog to see the answers to those questions: https://lnkd.in/dQUFCkMX Suggestions for the upcoming posts are more than welcome!
🔊 New blog post ready! This month we have an article written by Angie Lisseth Bernal Torres, one of our Forest Engineers at hummingbirds. In her article, Angie explains what are Afforestation, Reforestation, and Regeneration (ARR) projects and why they are an essential piece in the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket. 🌲 🔎 To simplify the understanding of #ARR projects worldwide, Angie has conducted an extensive study answering some of the most frequently asked questions. The analysis studies the certified projects from Verra, Gold Standard, ACR at Winrock International, and Cercarbono, which collectively represent 82% of all ARR carbon credits issued to date. If you want an in-depth understanding of this subject, don’t miss this post and feel free to share any questions with us in the comments below! 👇 Stay tuned for next month’s post! #NatureBasedSolutions #Reforestation
