The following paper was published on May 25, 2024, by me and my co-authors. Acoustic event detection (AED) systems, combined with video surveillance, enhance urban security by automatically detecting incidents, supporting smart city initiatives. AED systems typically use mel spectrograms, which consist of various frequency bands. Some bands, however, may be redundant or ineffective. This paper presents a method to identify and eliminate these non-essential bands using a two-sample t-test, which compares frequency bands from different acoustic events. By removing useless bands, the system's input feature dimension is reduced, accelerating classifier training and improving overall accuracy and efficiency. The proposed method reduces spectrogram bands by 26.3% and shows minimal variance in key metrics, validating its effectiveness.

Over the years I have passed by countless placards similar to the one pictured, they are common and easily blend in with other common warnings and warning postings in public areas. However, twice I have experienced equipment interference! both of these scenarios were in areas where you would expect RF interference but complete interruption is another story. The interesting part was how it impacted the GPR equipment vs EM locating. EM locating showed signs similar to a bad or poor ground, whereas GPR was completely disabled with zero visibility. Now it has become common practice when providing a consultation to inquire about possible high levels of radio frequency in the area, or the use of radio frequency blocking equipment. It is not the most common occurrence but it does happen! Have you ever experienced a RF interruption? (on any type of electronic equipment).
