Education reflects the cultural values of a nation. One aspect that reflects cultural differences in education is the norm of addressing teachers. In Indonesia, we are accustomed to calling teachers "Bu" or "Pak." This is not just words; it signifies our respect for teachers. This habit is deeply ingrained among Indonesian children from an early age and continues into adulthood. From children to adults, we always use "Bu" and "Pak" when addressing teachers because it's considered polite and respectful. On the other hand, in Australia, there's a different custom regarding addressing teachers compared to Indonesia. Since 2018, some schools in Australia have implemented a new policy allowing students to address their teachers by their first name without using "Bu" or "Pak." This change aims to create a more relaxed learning environment and strengthen the sense of community. They choose to change this habit to foster openness and build closer relationships. It's important to remember that neither norm is inherently better than the other. Both reflect different cultural contexts and should be respected accordingly. Understanding these differences can also help us interact with people from different cultures, treating them as opportunities to learn about cultural diversity. https://lnkd.in/gNg7aTnV Transforming Indonesia's Higher Education Landscape: New Insights Recently (2023), the Center for Indonesian Policy Studies published a policy brief highlighting persistent challenges and new opportunities in Indonesia's higher education sector: Key challenges: • Low tertiary education participation rate (31.2% in 2021) • Only 4 Indonesian universities in the QS World University Rankings Top 500 • Just 3.65% of accredited universities have an A rating Root causes include: • Limited research output • Only 14.5% of academics hold PhD degrees • Poor fundamental skills among students • Funding constraints and governance issues Despite government initiatives like research endowment funds and international collaboration programs, progress has been limited. A promising development: Indonesia now allows foreign universities to establish campuses, especially in Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Policy recommendations: 1. Integrate foreign campuses into national higher education programs 2. Promote collaborations between foreign and local institutions 3. Enhance local academics' capacity for global engagement 4. Improve human resources in local universities This comprehensive approach could leverage international partnerships to significantly boost Indonesia's higher education quality. This is a good article. It provides a view on current education system in the country. There are, definately for our MoE to look into. If you are a policy maker, you are concerned with your policy today that impacting the generations to come. This only making sense. "DEI" Diversity, Equity & Inclusion are important basis. In Business, my opinion / preference is D&I. E many be part of D and in our action. These are good basis to work on. Meritocracy is of paramount important. When you dont know in area you supposed to be an expert, it is embarassing. At the least, do some checking prior penning down your decision. Accountability and ability to right the situation reflect your integrity and professionalism. When you defended your highly questionable academic journal, risking the University good-will, produced no concrete evidence in defence, refused to academic debate, only to quietly withdrew the journal several months later, this show your matuarity, integrity and level of accountability. Hope our MoE and our leaders / experts will look into it. Merdeka is coming. Let stay together and move forward. Let put our hair down and paint the town red. Enjoy. This contrast is particularly striking when you consider how discipline in Indian schools often emphasizes obedience and conformity, whereas Finnish schools foster an environment that encourages creativity and independent thinking. The cultural differences in educational philosophy can lead to vastly different experiences for students, making it intriguing to see how these systems shape learning outcomes and student attitudes toward education. One of the standout features of Finland's education system is its commitment to equity, ensuring that every student has access to quality education regardless of their background. This is a stark contrast to the more competitive nature of Indian schools, where academic excellence is often the primary focus. Additionally, Finnish students experience minimal standardized testing, with only one major exam at the end of their schooling, which allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable learning experience. Teachers in Finland are highly trained and respected, holding master's degrees and engaging in continuous professional development, which is quite different from the often less rigorous training seen in other countries. The emphasis on personalized education, less homework, and a focus on overall well-being creates a nurturing environment that promotes both academic success and personal growth, showcasing a holistic approach to education that many other systems could learn from.

I learn a lot from talking to people. I have spoken to a few Singaporean parents whose kids go to a world-class education system (according to PISA). It's interesting that in Singapore: 1. Schools start tomorrow. 2. There is still PSLE anxiety 3. Streaming has been adjusted 4. Alumni matters in terms of "favoured school" No. 4 is probably the silliest IMO. My good LI friend Yuanto Kusnadi told me that he sent his kids to "sekolah buangan" (aka non-favoured schools). I guess if I were to live in Singapore, I would just follow him to maybe send my kids to anothet "sekolah buangan". Kids, stay in school and do your best. But life is not just about your studies. Why do I say that? Well, I didn't fail school to pass life. However life will just pass you by if you focus solely on schooling. To Ivan, good luck for tomorrow as well. To my other Singaporean parents with kids, yes... they are back at school tomorrow. WFH time?
