💡 It’s no exaggeration to say that advanced planning can be the difference between your business bouncing back quickly after a natural disaster or closing its doors for good. Continuing my thoughts on continuity plans, here’s a few tips for SME owners to consider BEFORE the proverbial hits the fan…. Taking care of business when disaster, illness or an accident strikes. 1. Consider critical illness insurance that could help pay a regular income if you’re incapacitated for a long time 2. Get as much documented as possible. When someone needs to pickup a piece of client work, they should be able to read a client file and understand what to do next. 3. Have an open discussion with staff/partners/significant others about worst-case scenario planning. 4. Create a systems manual. Make sure someone can pickup a task, read it and do it without any further instruction. 5. Get things out of your head. The brain is wonderful and useful….until it’s unable to pass on information to someone else. 6. Try to have 6 months of living expenses set aside to cover emergencies. Longer if you can. 7. Get Business Power of Attorney so someone trusted can act and make decisions on your behalf. If you’re out of action wages and bills will still need paying.
