Given the projected growth in aluminium demand, which recycling alone cannot meet, it’s clear that we must ramp up the production of Primary Aluminium. This increase inevitably necessitates the expansion of bauxite mining and alumina refining. Strategically, it’s beneficial for major primary aluminium producers to aim for an integrated Bauxite-Alumina-Aluminium production business.
When assessing projects for these necessary production boosts, it’s crucial to factor in the decarbonisation targets that the global aluminium industry is striving to achieve. Alumina production must also lower its Carbon Footprint. Considering that each ton of aluminium requires approximately 1.93 tons of alumina, this increases the average Carbon Footprint of aluminium by more than 1.30 tons of CO2 per ton of primary aluminium.
Emissions from primary aluminium associated with the Bauxite-Alumina supply chain can be reduced through the adoption of innovative green technologies such as Electric Calcination, Mechanical Vapour Recompression, and Renewable Electricity. These alternatives, which could expedite the decarbonisation of the aluminium industry, necessitate the use of electricity generated from 100% renewable sources and at a cost that is economically viable. Therefore, when evaluating locations for the construction of new infrastructure for optimal integrated Bauxite-Alumina-Aluminium production, it’s essential to consider the availability of significant bauxite reserves and sufficient 100% renewable energy sources for electricity generation. https://lnkd.in/eNt-hNek
