Melissa Lipsett, CEO, and Fiona Smith, Director of International Programs, were pleased to have the opportunity to represent Micah Australia alongside other Christian women leaders in Parliament House last week. They were there to speak about the need for Australia to increase its International Aid budget in the face of polycrisis—an increase in compounding conflicts and crises around our world. Investing in development, peace-making and security is not just good for our global neighbours, it’s good for Australia. 🌍 Rethinking Our Priorities: Addressing Humanitarian Needs Over Military Spending 🌍 Yesterday (18th June 2024) marked the commencement of the 56th session of the Human Rights Council, where the High Commissioner of the United Nations Human Rights Office delivered a powerful speech on the stark contrast between global military spending and humanitarian funding. The figures are striking: 🔸 Humanitarian Funding Gap: As of the end of May 2024, the gap between humanitarian funding requirements and available resources stands at $40.8 billion. The High Commissioner emphasized: "We urgently need to find our way back to peace, in line with the UN Charter and international law. In addition to inflicting unbearable human suffering, war comes with a hefty price tag." As we reflect on these numbers, it's crucial to consider the broader implications for global peace and human welfare. Reallocating even a fraction of military spending towards humanitarian aid could significantly alleviate human suffering and promote stability worldwide. 🌍 Addressing Global Conflicts: A Call for Collective Action 🌍 The ongoing conflicts in regions like Syria and Palestine remind us of the urgent need to combat the causes and consequences of war. While these issues are complex and deeply rooted, there are concrete steps we can take collectively to foster peace and stability. 1️⃣ Diplomatic Solutions: Supporting peace negotiations and strengthening international cooperation are crucial. Diplomacy, not violence, should be our first response to conflict. 2️⃣ **Humanitarian Assistance**: Providing aid to affected populations and supporting refugees is essential. We must ensure that those suffering in war zones receive the food, shelter, and medical care they need. 3️⃣ **Addressing Root Causes**: Economic development and education are powerful tools in preventing conflict. By reducing poverty and promoting human rights, we can tackle the underlying issues that lead to violence. 4️⃣ **Strengthening Governance**: Good governance and the rule of law are fundamental. We need to support the development of strong institutions and hold those responsible for war crimes accountable. 5️⃣ **Promoting Dialogue and Reconciliation**: Encouraging interfaith and intercultural dialogue helps build understanding and reduce tensions. Reconciliation efforts are key in healing divided communities. 6️⃣ **Engaging Civil Society**: Empowering local communities and supporting grassroots movements are vital for sustainable peace. Nonviolent activism can drive meaningful change. 7️⃣ **Combatting Misinformation**: Accurate information is essential in preventing and resolving conflicts. We must support independent journalism and fight against misinformation that fuels hatred. 8️⃣ **Supporting International Law**: Upholding international norms and strengthening multilateral institutions like the UN are critical in maintaining global peace. Addressing these challenges requires sustained effort and collaboration from all sectors—governments, NGOs, the private sector, and individuals alike. Let’s commit to being part of the solution, advocating for peace, and supporting those working to make a difference. Together, we can contribute to a more peaceful world. #PeaceBuilding #GlobalConflict #Diplomacy #HumanRights #HumanitarianAid #Governance #Reconciliation #GlobalCitizenship

Last week, I joined the first-ever side event at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on “Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations: Building Global Solidarity.” Co-hosted by Canada, Belgium, and Argentina, the event underscored the importance of global solidarity to prevent and end the practice. I spoke about needing more research to better understand this complicated policy area. A special thank you to Julie Sunday and all the organizers of this event. ▶ For more research on this topic, read The Soufan Center (TSC)’s report “Citizens for Leverage” https://lnkd.in/g-_nyZKf ▶ For more on the human impact on families and hostages, follow Hostage International ▶ For more on how to support and protect aid workers, follow Protect Humanitarians ▶ For more on multilateral efforts, follow Canada’s Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention In State-to-State Relations https://lnkd.in/eCsGsNTv ▶ For more on investigating cases, follow the work of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention https://lnkd.in/eZtBreF2 #HRC56 #ArbitraryDetention
