The way Liberty Media transformed Formula One is one of THE most impressive stories in sport business. They… ⁠- kickstarted show Drive to Survive, contributing to a surge in sponsorship (expected $550m this year)... massive kudos to Ian Holmes the man who orchestrated all this and to all Creative Artists Agency for bringing in these monster sponsorship deals - negotiated broadcasting deals with the likes of Sky Sports and ESPN – as well as launching their own platform F1 TV (which reported revenues of $47m+ in 2021) - launched U.S expansion - implemented a cost cap, which levelled the playing field between teams and enabled them to build accurate financial models In 2004, Jaguar Racing was sold for $1. Now, all F1 teams are worth at *least* $1.3bn. From every team requiring hundreds of millions of dollars of investment per year, to over half of the teams turning a profit (& the biggest valued at $3bn+)... …this evolution is *hugely* impressive from a business perspective. The end of F1 testing can only mean 3 things: - hearing the Dutch national anthem on a Sunday will return - a new series of Drive to Survive is released (see trailer below) - F1 journalists start to predict the pecking order for the upcoming season It looks like Red Bull and Max Verstappen will once again lead the field ahead of Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes with Haas and Sauber still languishing in 9th and 10th. During the Sky F1 broadcast it was suggested that the budget cap and wind tunnel handicapping should have enabled teams at the back with less money to compete. However, F1 is so much more than just money and wind tunnel time. The huge variable that is undervalued in the brief analysis above, and across society, and that isn’t covered in this regulation, is people. Engineers and drivers. Adrian Newey and Max Verstappen are both still at Red Bull along with their team of amazing teams - this should be factored into why they maintain their competitiveness. They are able to extract more from their wind tunnel time because they better understand the requirements of building a faster car. The NFL, NBA and MLB seem to understand the power of people in levelling up the league through the draft system where they recognise the importance of “spreading the wealth” of talent to make the league more competitive. I can’t see this ever happening in F1, like it doesn’t happen in European football, but if you want to really give the teams at the back of the field to compete, is there really any other option? Just because you throw money at something, doesn’t guarantee you success. Away from F1, Chelsea and Man United can vouch for this who both must look enviably at the likes of Aston Villa, Brentford and Brighton who despite having much smaller budgets, can still compete. I’m not saying a big budget doesn’t make a difference, but couple it with the right people and then you’re onto a winner - reference, Manchester City Football Club #f1 #sportsbusiness

🏎️ F1 has launched a FAST channel in the US 🏎️ It complements live broadcast of races and shows “replays, highlights, reruns of classic Grands Prix, and documentaries”. 🏁🏁This is a great move; a few thoughts: 👀 The FAST channel is a good way to keep F1 on fans’ minds and radar during the offseason (incl. casual fans) ⏱️ Filling 24/7 (or even 12 hours with replays) with programming might be challenging —> creating new content is key to attracting eyeballs and maximizing monetization 🎥 This new content can be an opportunity to attract new audiences beyond the core fan base - e.g., drivers’ lifestyle, teams’ budgeting and financial management 💰 What does this mean for the existing F1 TV Access subscription package (which doesn’t show live races)? If the FAST channel is expanded worldwide, might F1 TV Access be phased out, and might the F1 TV Pro package (that shows live races) become more affordable? https://lnkd.in/dPQfyeam
