Permanent vet both in clinic as a GP vet, ad hoc locum and remote online triage vet for vidivet. Passionate about mental health both in the workplace and general life. #dontlettheblackdogbeatyou unless it's a Labrador
#puppyexcersise #howmuchistoomuch #orthopedicvets Firstly apologies for the mass tagging of orthopedic surgeons from my LinkedIn connections. It was always going to happen given that neither DIY or all things boney are my strong points. If I'm honest I do lump orthopedics and home improvement into the same category. Basically I just wanted an educated input into my argument around exercising puppies... I often see new owners of large breed puppies who have come with a breeder contract which sets out guidelines as to how far they are allowed to walk their puppy each day. In my opinion these guidelines are not based on fact or any scientific research, however I am happy to be corrected. I listened to a podcast about 6 months ago describing a study where beagle puppies and young adults were exercised for miles and miles a day on a treadmill, the outcome of which did not seemingly have a detrimental effect on their growth plates, bone development or cartilage formation. I can find neither the podcast or the study using my extensive use of Google so I am resorting to tapping yourselves for information and or debate. My generic advice to owners is rather than be overly concerned with the numbers on the clock for distance when exercising their puppies, but better to be concerned with the type of exercise and the time spent doing it. For example a 5 month old lab puppy that walks 2 miles in a controlled fashion is far less likely to injure itself than with 40 minutes rough and tumble with another large breed puppy/adult. Please correct me if there is better more scientifically backed evidence out there. I'm not looking for a fight more for guidance from those in the know! 🙌🏼 Picture of a zoomed in xray I took on Monday of a very unhappy stifle in an elderly GSD 😬 Joe Fox Russell Chandler Mike Farrell Mark Morton Rob Pettitt Toby Gemmill Matt Hibberd Ben Walton Tom Anderson Bartosz Ropelewski Kuba Letek Fabio Frazzica Marcela Gicova Jan Janovec Plus anyone else who would like to throw in their opinions are most welcome to comment!

Ceri, this is one of my biggest frustrations! There is no evidence exercise causes developmental joint disease. Proving causation is extremely difficult and most studies that conclude a link are markedly flawed. I recommend full exercise, including high intensity exercise, as long as it is built up over time based on fitness, as with anyone when they exercise. Keeping an ideal body condition score is the key! https://lnkd.in/eRPF2JyU
