If you have 100 people spending money and supporting you, congratulations YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL. Please don't get caught up in chasing vanity metrics. It could be a distraction from doing what matters – building a genuine fan base. I'm not saying numbers are bad; we all want them, but most importantly, we want those numbers to mean something and produce the desired result. This is something I learn every day as I see artists with large followings struggle to sell 10 items, while under-the-radar artists are selling hundreds to thousands of exclusive merch, pieces of vinyl, and cassette tapes to an audience that appreciates their work. Respect versus revenue? It's a question I never thought I'd ask. To what extent should entertainment venues prioritise boosting ancillary revenues over the actual performance and experience? At a recent Planet Earth Live performance in North London (which was exceptional!), I was taken aback by the level of disruption: latecomers flooding in, chatting, and buying snacks during the show, despite repeated requests for punctuality. This lack of respect is facilitated by venues keeping doors open for late arrivals and operating retail during performances. As a former principal flautist, I truly empathise with the City of Prague orchestra who managed to remain professional in the face of such distractions. Is this acceptable?
