We relocated to Asheville in 2023 and witnessed some of the devastation firsthand. It's no exaggeration to say that what some people have experienced is beyond catastrophic. The city of Asheville will not have running water for 'several weeks' (the only real estimate we've heard). Cell service and electricity remain spotty. Gas station and grocery store lines can last multiple hours. We were very, very lucky and sustained no house damage from water, wind or trees. When a road out of town finally opened Sunday, we were able to head east to my parents' house. Thousands of others there don't have that option and need every bit of help that they can receive. I haven't been on LinkedIn lately (for obvious reasons), so if these links have been posted a thousand times, feel free to keep scrolling. If this is the first time you're seeing them, consider helping out a region filled with incredible people who just went through something unimaginable. Thx for reading.

Not sure what the I&M Canal National Heritage Area is exactly? Here's an explanation. Also gives you insight into what I've been working on over the last 28+ years...
The I&M Canal National Heritage Area turns FORTY on Aug. 24... But, what is the I&MCNHA? 🤔 Well, first there was the I&M Canal, a 96-mile hand-dug canal that opened in 1848 and connected the Illinois River to Lake Michigan. The canal was the final link needed to complete an all-water route that ran from the East Coast through the Great Lakes down to the Gulf of Mexico. That route led to extensive growth in the region, including transforming Chicago from a swamp town into a metropolis. In 1984, Congress and President Ronald Reagan recognized the need to develop a "new kind of national park" that promoted the culture, heritage and economic development of a region that wasn't necessarily on federally owned land. The FIRST of these "national heritage areas" was ours, which supports 5 counties and 60 communities (862 square miles in all) that owe their growth to the canal. The I&MCNHA is marked in blue on the map. The Canal Corridor Association (CCA) is the nonprofit, coordinating agency that has been given authorization by Congress and works closely with the National Park Service to oversee the I&M Canal National Heritage Area. In this capacity, the CCA has developed the I&M Canal Visitors Center, I&M Canal Boat Tours, numerous events and programming throughout the year and even this social media channel. 😁 For more info, visit our site: • I&M Canal: https://lnkd.in/gHW7qHTr • I&M Canal National Heritage Area: https://lnkd.in/gC-MKJiF • Canal Corridor Association: https://lnkd.in/gVajpqyZ #iandmcanal #illinois #community #storytelling #enjoyillinois #history #historymatters #nationalheritagearea #illinoiscommunity #chicago #visitillinois #americanhistory

Everything is connected. When communities are faced with issues like extreme drought, it's often nature that delivers a solution. We can learn a lot about the world around us by looking at the soil under our feet - or, how the plants along a riverbank help to clean water coming in and also prevent flooding. That's why the Foundation for America's Public Lands has invested important seed funding to help Western communities trouble-shoot growing pressures from drought. Whether it's putting tech to work in ranching communities, or supporting infrastructure and restoration, each little glimmer has a meaningful impact across the entire Colorado River Basin.
🎉 EXCITING NEWS: Today, the Foundation announced the launch of its new Drought Resilience Fund with a $2.4M investment to help boost drought resilience on public lands and waters in the Colorado River Basin! The first two grants will help BLM partners in Colorado and Arizona expand innovative, community-led initiatives to combat severe drought, secure drinking water, and improve the health of our lands and waters. Lady Liberty looks pretty good for her age, but the 200-year-old fort that serves as her base has seen better days. The cold and windy conditions in New York Harbor, combined with storms and sea water, are tough on structures, and Fort Wood is no exception. Currently, about 50,000 highly visible square feet of walking surface at the fort are in disrepair, meaning the site can't provide adequate accessibility for visitors. An investment from the Great American Outdoors Act will change that and make the site safer for its 3 million annual visitors. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. Join NPCA in urging Congress to keep investing in our national parks and extend GAOA by at least five more years! https://lnkd.in/ej6auypb #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #ProtectOurParks #ParkFunding #LadyLiberty #StatueOfLiberty #NewYork

Hello All, Let's get real. This project is another masterpiece of Mr. Steven Levene/COO of Metrolinx. The steel span Through Plate Girder over existing Tracks at Newmarket 4.90 Davenport has many structural concerns. Mr. steven leven/(current COO of Metrolinx/ by then VP of RailCiorridor) decided to create a Risk Assessment Team Meeting (on Friday, June 4, 2021 1:30 PM-3:30 PM, ) and chaired this Team meeting. Created +/-35 pages of check marks, and he concluded that: all are good, the Case Closed! The above case was opened by an engineer (Name DELETED] of RailCorridor to begin with. the steel span was a Through Plate Girder, TPG, +/-100 ft long, double track, and amazingly, Direct Fixation. Why Direct Fixation instead of Ballasted Deck? Everyone knows that Direct Fixation will reduce the life-span of the bridge from +100 years to around 30 years. well Metrolinx has the answer!!! Also, the girders have top and bottom flange splices, as well as web splices exactly at the same location: one series on the North side of the span and one series on the south side. the above splices means that the weakest point of the top flange is aligned with the weakest point of the web and aligned with the weakest point of bottom flange, at two separate locations, one on the North side and one on the south side. you do the math!!! If you want more information, please let me know. Also, on September 18th and 19th, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky, during the Arema Annual Conference, Metrolinx gave a presentation regarding the elevated bridge at Davenport Diamond, Newmarket sub/MX, and New Toronto Sub/(of a real railway). Ironically, Metrolinx did not talk about this portion (steel double track TOG crossing over the existing tracks of another railway) of the project. the bridge designer was not part of the presenter team. The bridge contractor was not part of the presenter team. I doubt that there was even a representative of the actual designer and the actual contractor team at Arema 2024. The people at the Arema Conf. 2024 were asking why? Well, the answer is: there is a series of serious issues with that steel span bridge over the New Toronto Tracks. Stay tuned for more info. @phil verster /CEO Metrolinx Steven Levene/ COO Metrolinx Metrolinx regards Siamak Khajehpour, P.Eng.
Thank you, Davenport community! Join us for ice cream and a visit from GO Bear this Sunday, September 15 from 1-4pm at Campbell Park as we express our gratitude for your support while we completed important Davenport Diamond rail intersection improvements in your neighbourhood.
