When it comes to the deal PNG politicians have signed with Singapore, which gives PNG tribes and clans 60% of profits (not revenues) from the carbon credits generated by their rainforests ... I've pointed out that PNG politicians and bureaucrats are SCREWING PNG tribespeople out of the revenues generated by their constitutionally protected rainforest property assets. The PNG Government is engaged in an act of treason against the PNG constitution. All the revenues generated should go back to PNG tribes who own the rainforest, and not just a percentage of the profits. By contrast, gold mining is a bit more complex. Unlike carbon capture from growing rainforest, gold mining is a capital intensive and skilled labour intensive business. That labour and skilled resource has to be paid for a a fair return provided to investors. The key for the gold mine, is transparency. How are profits or revenues measured? Is that information transparently reported back to land owners? Why can't a mining royalty be paid instead? Can those royalties (or profits) be accrued into a trust fund so that even when the mine is exhausted, local people continue to earn a steady income?
