I came across an interesting video (https://lnkd.in/dX3Bsz-p) today on whether Devin AI, an AI software engineer, will make software engineering jobs obsolete. Dhaval Patel, who runs a software services company with a dedicated AI department, believes AI will likely automate some tasks but not eliminate the entire field. The video dives into two types of software engineers: SDE 1.0 and SDE 2.0. SDE 1.0 are engineers who follow instructions and complete well-defined tasks. SDE 2.0, on the other hand, is involved in the entire product development cycle, from design to implementation. They also need to understand the business domain and have strong computational thinking skills. The key takeaway? Devin AI can replace SDE 1.0 jobs because these jobs involve system one thinking, which is a fast and intuitive way of thinking. AI is already good at this type of thinking. However, Devin AI is unlikely to replace SDE 2.0 jobs soon because they require system two thinking, which is slower and more deliberative. AI has not yet mastered this type of thinking.
