Resharing again TYPES OF HEAT EXCHANGERS BASED ON SERVICE (FUNCTION) Based on service (function), Heat Exchangers are classified as below. CHILLER It cools a process fluid by evaporating a refrigerant. It is used where required the process temperature is lower than that obtainable using air or cooling water as the heat sink. Common refrigerants are ammonia, freon, ethylene and propylene. CONDENSER It converts process vapour totally or partially to liquid by removing heat to cooling water or air. COOLER It cools the single phase process fluid by removing heat to cooling water or air. EVAPORATORS It is an exchanger specifically designed to concentrate water solutions by vaporizing some of the water. EXCHANGER It is any unfired heat transfer equipment which facilitates heat transfer between two process streams. HEATER It heats the process stream usually without change of phase by condensing steam (utility). VAPORISOR It is a heater which converts liquid into vapour. REBOILER It is a vaporizer that provides latent heat of vaporization to the bottom of a fractionation TOWER The heating media can be steam, hot water or hot process stream. Reboilers which return only vapour to the tower are called kettle reboilers. STEAM GENERATOR It is a special type of vaporizer used to produce steam. - Generally the heat source is excess heat beyond that which is required for process hence are also called as Waste Heat Boilers. Turndown ration of the boiler is the operating range of boiler from maximum capacity to minimum capacity in which boiler can run efficiently without any external fuel support. When we start boiler from zero after few time we will run it on its maximum value that is called MCR maximum continues rating. During operation if something happen then we need to minimize boiler capacity then there is minimum limit until we can run boiler, that limit is called minimum continues limit, as there is feeding system and other equipment’s installed with boiler that cannot run less than their designed minimum output so boiler minimum continuous rating linked with these equipment’s.
