In the 10th edition of the Australian Charities Report, released today by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, the Commissioner reminds readers in her Foreword: "The differences between the smallest and largest charities could not be starker. When we talk about charities, set obligations or when policy is made, we must be mindful of the difference in resources and capacity. Trusts and foundations have been urged to “take more risks” with their money in order to benefit the smaller charities they support. Speaking at an event organised by the Cranfield Trust on Tuesday, Essex Community Foundation chief executive Caroline Taylor said funders should support “experimentation” from smaller charities so they can “unlock creative solutions to complex challenges”. She told the audience at Mercers’ Hall in London that funders should “use our influence to advocate for better funding models and highlight the critical role that smaller charities play in society”. As part of the same panel discussion, recently appointed National Lottery Community Fund chair Julia Cleverdon said more work should be done to increase philanthropy in the UK, particularly at a local level.

Bring it on! Funders need to pay what it takes to ensure high quality, impactful and ongoing services for those who need it the most. “Maybe it’s time to set some minimum requirements: 1. No contracts for less than two years 2. Indirect costs at least 20% of the total budget 3. A maximum of one or two program or project reports required per annum (no obligatory quarterly or monthly reporting requirements). Imagine if our sector could agree to minimum standards in funding contracts and boycott any non-compliant funding rounds. We could never get 100% of organisations on board, but maybe it’s worth exploring?”
