Congratulations to Hari Budha Magar MBE FRGS for winning a Pride of Britain special recognition award last night.
The award was given to Hari for his amazing feats showing what is possible for people with a disability. Last year Hari summitted Everest, becoming the first ever double above knee amputee to stand on top of the world’s tallest mountain.
Along the way he is also raising funds for charities that have supported him and helped so many others.
We’re really proud to be an official supporter of Hari, both when he scaled Mount Everest, and now on his latest challenge climbing the tallest mountains on each of the world’s seven continents.
Well done Hari!
This report is staggering, yet totally believable because we and our member network are experiencing its findings every day.
I often say, and absolutely know from experience, national charities cannot do what local charities can do.
To be honest I usually say this in the context of infrastructure or capacity-building support, but nevertheless it remains true.
National infrastructure cannot do what local infrastucture (where it still exists) can.
Yet according to this report national organisations seem to be benefitting from a huge percentage of the available funding, despite acknowledgement from the very top of the value of the grass roots organisations meeting the local need each day. These are often organisations run by local people who know their areas, know those who receive their support and who will stay far beyond the time when the money runs out.
Further evidence if needed that trickle down economics doesn't work, even in the charitable sector. ⬇ ⬇ ⬇

There is so much to take in from The Centre for Social Justice most recent report - Overlooked and Underfunded.
One of the most stand out stats for me?
“Income for the small charity sector has declined by £4.6 billion compared with an overall £4.5 billion rise for larger charitable organisations”
The last few years have been horrendous for small charities, absolutely horrendous.
The fall out we’re seeing from this is the closure of small charities left, right and centre and small charity leaders facing extreme stress and pressure that is leading to some very serious consequences for people’s lives.
Rest assured there are people who see this is happening and really give a shit.
And we’re working together to try and do something about it 💚

I read this report yesterday and there are some devastating statistics.
💔85% of all charitable income in England and Wales goes to just 4 per cent of registered charities.
💔 93 % of all charitable income in Scotland, goes to 6 per cent of charities.
💔 97% of charities that close are small and medium sized charities.
The full report is in Vic's comments 📝

Smaller charities are facing incredibly challenging times. The Overlooked and Underfunded report from
The Centre for Social Justice states that post pandemic charities expenses have risen by an average of 12%, and income 3%. You don’t need to be an accountant to see that these numbers create an operational headache.
Being a trustee I’ve witnesssd the challenges first hand. I know just how much the income is needed to support incredibly valuable community services. Sometimes these services are those that many people think are fully funded, they’re not.
One thing I know with certainty is that I’ve never worked with such passionate and resilient Individuals. The future will be a challenge but we’ll work together for change.

Are you planning on donating to charities assisting people affected by natural disasters and other crises? As tax season approaches, various scams start emerging like fake charity promoters will use emails, websites, and alter their caller ID to appear as a real charity.

The CSJ Foundation report:
Our report found that the vast majority of charitable funding in the UK is skewed towards a small number of large charities at the top, as 85 per cent of all funding goes to just 4 per cent of all registered charities. In addition, the great impact of grassroots organisations is under-appreciated by many.

Governance. I have witnessed two scenarios recently where the governance of an organization was corrupted by bad faith actors. One is a provincial entity and the other is a national charitable foundation. In both instances the ego and desire for control and power are ruining the great work that had been achieved by the previous leadership and will potentially tarnish the brand of these good organizations. Sad to see.

Purpose Driven!
It’s one thing to evaluate a company by what it posts—the messages, the campaigns, the carefully crafted words. But it’s entirely another to evaluate a company by what it provides.
This is what purpose-driven leadership looks like. Proud to know and collaborate with such an inspiring team.

We'd like to give a shoutout to FINN Partners and Gil Bashe for a very meaningful donation to our charity. In a world of competing interests all demanding attention, raising funds to improve the lot of disadvantaged expectant mothers can be challenging and at times, impossible.
Without contributions from companies that share our vision of a better world, we'd be nowhere.
Thank you!
Experienced Charity CEO and Trustee/Board Member, empowering colleagues to flourish. Specialising in the areas of regulatory compliance, governance, change management, transformation and organisational growth.
It really takes a lot to be a great Trustee.
Taking responsibility (in ALL your areas of responsibility) and always acting in the best interests of the charity, is crucial.
Over the last 25 years, I have worked with some brilliant Trustees.
Having been a Trustee myself, I would say that you should ensure you are fully aware of the responsibilities BEFORE you go for a Trustee role.
If you haven’t got the necessary skills, knowledge and experience, and you can’t manage risk (even taking a risk, and being brave at times), don’t become a Trustee.
Otherwise, go for it - the charity sector needs YOU!!

Almost a million people give their time to be trustees across the UK.
And the charity sector just wouldn't work without you!
So to all the chairs, treasurers, and board members who give so much, often behind the scenes, we say - thank you!
You're one in a million 🤩
