We recently launched our Technician Passport, bringing together our Service Team leads from throughout Australia. The Technician Passport is a structured, verified and repeatable process for onboarding and developing Service Technicians from their first day at HydroChem through to becoming a “certified HydroChem technician”. The program utilises resources such as Hydro Academy, the HydroChem Leadership Development Program modules (developed over the last two years), state regulations, Australian Standards, and on the job training. This program equips individuals with essential skills such as effective communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving—key competencies in today’s competitive job market.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognise, understand, and manage emotions effectively. This week our vacation students discovered the superpower of EI. Participating in an interactive “VacChat” development session, facilitated by Michael Roberts, Culture and Leadership Specialist | Registered Psychologist. Students from across Newmont Australia had the opportunity to complete an EI self-assessment, to understand and improve their self-awareness, social awareness, self-management and relationship management. Providing future focused skills to enable our early careers talent to reach their full potential and respond instead of react.

I'm just putting this out there: ISO professional mentors for our International Leadership Academy (ILA). The participants of this program are young adults interested in careers in international relations or foreign trade. The objective of the mentorship is to share ideas, resources, and possible connections to help these young people see their career possibilities. The total commitment is only 4 hours. It's an easy but impactful lift. Here is what the mentorship commitment looks like: Attend our ILA class on Wednesday 9.11, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Meet your two program participants and start identifying how you can assist with their career professional development goals and needs. Outside of our ILA class, meet with the two participants separately (in person, via Zoom, or by phone) for one hour to continue discussing their professional development goals and needs. Attend the final ILA class on Wednesday 11.13, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Meet with your two program participants and finish any final professional development goals and needs conversations. After a bit of a hiatus I was back in the water teaching scuba yesterday with Underwater Sports, Inc. It was much fun, and one of the things I noticed was how quickly I was willing to make judgement calls in the interest of comfort and safety of the participants. Whereas previously I might have asked a cold student to tough it out, this time I sent them to shore with a divemaster right away to warm up. Who's going to learn, and have fun, when they can't think because they're shivering? I think the same goes for corporate leadership development. We need to set the conditions for people to be able to focus and not be distracted by texts, Slacks, emails, and a thousand other things. How do you set optimal learning conditions in your programs? And also: Front row on the ferry headed to Edmonds at oh-dark-thirty. Always a plus.
