“We’ve got a problem!” Yes, a global one at it! A recent study reveals that 20-40% of UK adults remain completely unaware of teleophthalmology in eye care. While usage shows slow progress compared to the 14.2% peak during the pandemic in 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 2020. In contrast, areas like mental health, chronic disease management, and dermatology showcase impressive telemedicine adoption, averaging 40%. This highlights the need to encourage further growth in teleophthalmology within the UK actively. 𝐒𝐨, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? My focus has always been on 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬, who are crucial in promoting teleophthalmology awareness. #innovationinhealthcare #innovation #healthcareexcellence #healthcareinnovation #healthcare #obgyn #doctor #medicalfield #medicalfacilities #medicalequipment 🤓Innovation can be defined as invention + adoption + diffusion. 🤓In healthcare, it may be a novel idea, product, service or care pathway that has clear benefits when compared to what is currently done. 🤓Successful innovations often possess two key qualities: they are both usable and desirable. How can proven innovations be quickly and effectively adopted as best practice and taken up across the whole healthcare system? 🤓How can the commercial success of our ideas be realised at home rather than abroad, as has too often been the case? 🤓This review explores important issues of funding, information governance, interoperability, medical device regulation, procurement, clinical prototyping and the systemic challenge of encouraging and scaling innovation. 🤓Happy to meeting and discussing with Ms Nisha Yadav, #phd working with an important project with #iitbombay on medical equipments development for #emergency #obstetricscare. Proud to contribute to this project, as a doctor working in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology for almost two decades.

Keratoconus is the most common corneal ectatic disorder worldwide. Currently, it accounts for nearly 30-40% of the corneal tertiary referrals, placing significant burden on the ophthalmic services. To address this issue, several innovative measures have been introduced, including the set up of virtual clinics and allied health professional (AHP)-led clinics. In our recently published article in the Eye journal, we highlight the effectiveness, safety and feasibility of AHP-led keratoconus service model (with minimal consultant support) in managing new and follow-up cases of suspected keratoconus. AHPs, including optometrists and nurse practitioners, were able to make the same correct decision as the corneal consultants in 92% of the cases! For more information, please see the link below: https://lnkd.in/eFkCTE6f Thank you Marianthi Bourlaki, MD for driving this work and the BMEC corneal team (Murad Khan, Saliamma Bandyopadhyay, Rashvinder Sahota, Emadur Khan, Urvasee Patel, Mykolas Pajaujis, Anil Aralikatti, Ankur Barua) for the collaborative effort! These interesting findings also spark another debate - should we be focussing on upskilling existing ophthalmic workforce (including AHPs) versus introducing new roles like physician associates into ophthalmic services? What's your thought on this? #keratoconus #cornea #crosslinking #ophthalmology #service #alliedhealthprofessional #physicianassociate

1wI wonder how you fix this sort of problem. Human capital is not something we can just ramp up production for. It takes years to “produce” an opthamologist - how do we plan on the decade time scale?
