MYTH: Typical primary care doctors can't provide MAT if they don't have on-site counseling. FACT: PCP's, OBGYN's, internal medicine physicians, and others can offer MAT and then connect to behavioral health counseling that exists in their area. Behavioral health counseling is beneficial early in one's recovery, but it does not have to be done in the same office. In early 2023, Massachusetts began implementing its Roadmap for Behavioral Health Reform, a sweeping set of changes aimed at simplifying access and entry to the state’s outpatient #behavioralhealth care system for all Massachusetts residents. In a new issue brief prepared with support from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation and based on input from select Massachusetts stakeholders and early implementation data, Manatt Health’s Stephanie Anthony, Elizabeth Boyes, Jocelyn Guyer and Natassia Rozario describe the key components of the Roadmap and how they are intended to improve access to behavioral health care services. The report also provides an update on implementation of the Roadmap, describes early successes and challenges, and identifies opportunities to strengthen implementation moving forward.
