Southern Water has announced plans to establish a sustainable water recycling plant on the Isle of Wight. This initiative aims to enhance the island’s water supply resilience and reducing dependence on mainland sources.
🔑 𝑲𝒆𝒚 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒅𝒆:
🔹 To protect the River Test, a new Isle of Wight recycling plant will provide a sustainable water source to meet rising demand and adapt to climate change.
🔹 The facility will add 8 million litres of recycled water daily to the River Yar, supporting stable Isle of Wight water supplies during droughts.
🔹 The recycling process uses specialized membranes to remove impurities through filtration and reverse osmosis, then reintroduces essential minerals, making the water safe for drinking.
🔹 Southern Water plans to establish four recycling plants, including one in Havant, which will also contribute to safeguarding the River Test.

Southern Water has initiated surveys and investigations at the proposed construction site and pipeline route. A public consultation is scheduled for winter or early next year, offering the community a chance to learn more and provide input on the project. Following the consultation, a planning application will be submitted to the Isle of Wight Council. If approved, construction will begin in late 2025, with the plant expected to be operational by 2030.
