🤯 “𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐦 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬?” - a question that popped into my head regularly in those 30 years in the quality world. And I know it’s nothing personal: “you have to be crazy to work in quality” said a former Chief Quality Officer (a 40k people, $ 27 billion turnover company) to me recently. I’m sure he had that question every now and then as well. The answer must be the passion ❤️🔥 for quality management, and the strong conviction that you can always improve something, to do things better tomorrow than today. It’s that strong belief that makes you won’t give up, as long as the company culture is the right one for you 😉. 🧑🏻🔬 As a lab technician I worked long days to assist in production trials, but I’m still proud of the work done and I still buy products from those brands. 🧏🏻 As a site quality manager, I often had the feeling that nobody was listening to me, but I know why and found a solution to that: now I make positive quality impacts. DM me if that’s your challenge as well. 🥇 Vendors and contract manufacturers didn’t always agree with my findings, and I had to explain (again) why those things were important. But then I had the objective to keep the complaint level at the same rate as the year before: what a reward for all the efforts done. ✈️ Traveling 60 to 70% of my time as Group Quality Director made me think regularly why I was doing this, but the feedback from site quality managers on the new quality vision was giving me the energy to continue. It’s fair to say that the why question is normal when working in quality. The message is: don’t give up, your impact is bigger than most people will notice. Be passionate about quality! How much elegance and likeability will influence how others perceive us? Our impact will depend on the way we communicate. Let me tell you a story. I used to work as a Quality Control Engineer in a production plant for detergents. I was also responsible for quality improvement projects. After realizing one of the most recurrent quality issues, I decided to work hard to fix it. When I finally did, I felt so proud that I called the Plant Manager to show him my achievement. All he said was “Good job”; then, he turned to the Process Manager and asked him why we needed to wait so long for a new hire to solve that long-lasting quality problem. The Process Manager was not so happy with how I communicated what I did. Eventually, I apologized for not being elegant. It was a great lesson about skills and elegance. We need competence to successfully perform a task. We need elegance to fit in and be liked by our environment, as we do not live in isolation. And we also need a culture where mistakes are forgiven because it’s learning what matters most. What are your thoughts on this?

As a quality manager, my goal is to improve the #quality of #products we give to our customers/consumers and also reduce #waste in the process. One way to improve quality is through #problemsolving. It helps to: _ Identify your issues/gaps impacting your #performance _ Find the #rootcauses contributing to the issues/gaps and _ Implement #effective #solutions to enhance the overall quality. I achieve this through a cross-functional #team that involves operators, quality experts, engineers, and management who analyze and address the identified root causes. Many Quality Managers are simply thrust into the role Without the proper training, experience, or support That's a problem The path to becoming a Quality Manager may look something like.. -works 1-3 years in Production -eventually moves into Quality as an Inspector -spends maybe 6-12 months as an Inspector -is a pretty good Inspector, becomes a Team Lead -learns a bit more about Quality during their year as a TL -is ready for their next challenge -receives internal promotion/jumps ship to become a Quality Supervisor -is a Quality Supervisor for a couple years, sits in on a few audits -begins feeling confident in their Quality expertise -starts looking for a Quality Manager role -lands a Quality Manager role -50/50 chance of success This certainly isn't the case for ALL Quality Managers, but it's the case for a LOT of the QM's I meet every year And this evolution can happen over just a few years Many of the hardest working, head-down-get-it-done folks I know are Quality Managers And they're darn good at what they do On the other hand.. We're left with countless Quality Managers who THINK they know what they're doing, but actually have no clue This isn't their fault It's ours In manufacturing, we're known to promote people with strong work ethic And assume they'll figure out "the other stuff" along the way The trouble is, if you don't know what "the other stuff" they need to figure out is.. How will they know? We need to do a better job in providing the right resources so our Quality Managers (and Quality team!) can be successful After all, these are the people who share legal responsibility in ensuring the products you make are safe Let's make sure they can do their job and do it well #quality #manufacturing #compliance #leadership #qualitas #training
