According to recent statistics from Feeding America, there are more than 44 million people experiencing food insecurity in the United States, including one in five children. In partnering with other nonprofits, such as World Relief, Construction for Change works to address hunger through the creation of kitchens and gardens, as well as working with local food banks. In our 2023 Annual Report, we take a look at trends at FISH over the past few years, particularly comparing pre-pandemic numbers to today. What we are seeing is continued growth in need, as the high cost of living paired with fewer support resources adds more and more strain for families. One area in which we have seen considerable increases is the pounds of food we distribute each year. In 2023, FISH distributed 1,560,603 pounds of food, more than any other year in our history as an organization. Our marketplace could not run without the generous support of our community. We source food from four main sources: donations from our Broomfield grocery stores and restaurant partners, Community Food Share, in-kind donations from our neighbors (which includes food drives!), and purchased food made possible by our incredible donors and by grant funding. All of these support networks allow us to stock a variety of food and personal care items for our families so they can shop for what their families need. Ahead of Sunday's #SuperBowl, here's a look at how U.S. Food Waste Pact signatory Aramark helps reduce #foodwaste at the #KansasCityChiefs stadium in KC. Says Aramark's Tim Witkowski: “Although our goal is always to eliminate food waste before it is generated, there may still be instances when we have excess safe-to-eat food available. Our food donation program provides this food to hunger relief agencies, like Pete's Garden, who distribute meals to organizations that serve families with children. We donate thousands of pounds of food each year, which helps feed families in the Kansas City community and keeps surplus prepared food out of landfills.” If you're hosting family and friends for the game, make sure you've got a plan to keep the food you serve from going to waste – only serve what you know will get eaten, have plenty of containers for people to take food home with them, and make sure you've got space in your refrigerator or freezer for leftovers 👍 https://lnkd.in/eNqPp6f3

As late as 2022, more than 44 million people in the US faced hunger, including one in five children. Five million more—when added to those 44 million and who collectively constitute one in six people in the US—continue to rely on food assistance from charities like Feeding America. This situation affects adults and children alike. A stunning 100% of counties are affected. Residents of urban food deserts, those who live in rural areas across the nation and particularly in the South, are often even more likely to lack access to sufficient food to thrive. Many factors—including poverty, unemployment and the cost of living—have brought us to this point.
