Innovative AI Model Mimics Brain Efficiency: UltraFastBERT Interesting paper from ETH Zurich: their new AI model, UltraFastBERT, works a bit like our brain. Instead of using all its 'neurons' at once, it picks just a small number for each task – about 0.3% of them. This is similar to how our brain turns on only the neurons it needs, making it super energy-efficient. Key Points: Simple and Smart: UltraFastBERT uses far fewer neurons than usual but still gets the job done well, just like our brains. Speedy Processing: It's much faster than traditional models, up to 78 times quicker on some computers, saving time and energy. Potential for the Future: This model shows us a new way to make AI more powerful while using less computing. These biocomputers, designed to use 100,000x less energy than traditional AI systems, could revolutionize AI by mimicking natural neural processes. However, are we venturing into ethically dubious territory? Meet the new lab head. Are you ready for the future? Is anyone? I've just finished reading "The Singularity is Nearer: When We Merge with AI" by Ray Kurzweil, published last week. Highly recommended. Most of Kurzweil's predictions have been pretty accurate in the past, and in this book he breaks down the latest artificial intelligence concepts for the non-specialist like me. Ray thinks that we are only a few years away from AI that is as good as humans on almost all levels, and better on most. Of course, AI is woven into our lives already, often in areas that we don't see or think about. And we've all tried Chat-GPT and eventually got a bit bored with it. But this is just the start. The pace of progress is getting much, much faster. Really profound, accelerating change is coming to every aspect of our work, social and personal lives. My little niche, biomedical research and laboratory science, will be no exception. How will science be different in future?
