Cartwright Communications' #ThursdayThought is back for 2024, and it's time for some topical flood chat... Having seen first hand how #StormBebet and #StormHenk have affected Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, a lot of focus has been on how we can keep building the homes we need as a nation while avoiding adding to the more than five million houses that are already at risk of flooding. There's no silver bullet, but the more we embrace innovations such as #SUDs, the better chance we have of keeping new homes dry (and insurable). #Attenuation | #Housebuilding | #Flooding | #FloodRisk | #FloodResilience
More than 1,000 homes across the country have been affected by the recent floods, with travel disruption affecting tens of thousands more. But what can be done to mitigate against flooding when increasing numbers of homes are being built on floodplains? 🏘️ Director Tom Snee discusses some of the interventions that are being used to tackle this growing issue. Learn more about our expertise in the construction industry and how we can help. https://lnkd.in/etbMbjfN #CartwrightCommunications #SustainableSolutions #ConstructionPR

Are you considering building a flood wall around your home or business? Our clients are increasingly inquiring about such constructions, with insurers understandably wanting to rigorously scrutinise the plans for structural robustness. Delve into the intricacies of building a flood wall with us, sectioned into three detailed scenarios. Our focus will be solely on the construction of these walls, setting aside other site-specific measures like drainage, for clarity and conciseness. Excessive rainfall, while beneficial in many aspects, can also lead to significant issues and challenges. A prime example of this is how roads, a vital infrastructure for any town or city, can be forced into closure. This can happen when a relatively small culvert is unable to cope with the rising water levels caused by the relentless downpour, resulting in flooding. This scenario has been witnessed in numerous instances, such as this particular road that had to be temporarily closed for safety reasons. We specialize in assisting towns and cities deal with such challenges. Our expertise includes providing solutions for culvert replacement, enabling smoother handling of flood waters and preventing road closures. If you're interested in understanding more about the nature of our work and how we can assist your township or municipality, take a look at this project case study: https://lnkd.in/eHAybYqs or give us a call. #mcmillenengineering

Today’s judgment of the Court of Appeal in Substation Action v SSESNZ [2024] EWCA Civ 12 warrants careful reading for its reasoning on both flooding and cumulative impact assessment. In particular, Lewis LJ (Coulson and William Davis LJJ agreeing) found that: ”The relevant provisions of EN-1, the Framework and the PPG do not require an applicant for development consent to demonstrate that whenever there is a risk of flooding from surface water there are no other sites reasonably available where the proposed development could be located in an area of lower surface water flood risk.” This could have significant practical implications for planning decisions, particularly where it is argued that surface water flood risk demands a sequential site selection exercise. Very disappointed not to succeed on this point in front of the Court. #nppf #flooding #planninglaw

Climate change often exacerbates the problems of poor infrastructure and poor planning. The linked article provides background on urban flooding and its causes. Urban residents should be aware of the probabilities of urban flooding and the best ways to deter it. Urban public officials and city staff should be aware of ways to manage this safety issue and be proactive rather than wait for what could become inevitable rather than preventable. Hurricane season is a good time to start making plans, if your locality hasn't been preparing for future problems. #governance #urbanflooding #climatechange #infrastructure #urbandesign #publicsafety #systemwideapproaches #stormwaterdesign https://lnkd.in/eZt8af65
