🏫 Chicago Board of Education’s Strategic Plan: Impact on Charter Schools🏫 The Chicago Board of Education is preparing to release a five-year strategic plan aimed at revitalizing district-run neighborhood schools and revisiting the choice system. Charter advocates are watching closely, as concerns grow about potential impacts on charter schools—public institutions managed by private organizations. Many fear the renewal process has become too burdensome, detracting from the focus on student success. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gejANFqZ As NLCP approaches our own charter renewal, we are seeking support from our community to ensure we can continue to provide excellent education to our students. #ThrowbackThursday In this Throwback Thursday, we're revisiting "Expanded Voucher Programs May Lead to Greater Neighborhood Diversity" by Danielle Waidley. In her blog, she goes into detail about how Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation (H.B. 7045), which greatly expanded Florida’s pioneering school choice programs in 2021. This legislation also greatly benefitted another aspect of school choice programs: stabilizing neighborhoods and improving equity in housing prices. The Florida legislation expanded several voucher programs to give families and students access to a range of education alternatives and school services, including private schools, transportation to public schools, tutors, summer or after-school education programs, and more. Unfortunately, sometimes, low-income families who want to give their children high-quality education cannot afford the higher house prices in wealthier neighborhoods with high-performing schools. These families live in less expensive areas where their children are zoned into low-performing schools. School choice programs have the potential to break this link. When school choice options such as vouchers are implemented, families don’t have to live geographically close to high-performing schools. They can live in more affordable housing while sending their children outside their neighborhood. All in all, these benefits show that school choice programs improve education outcomes by matching students to learning environments that help them develop academically. Changing schools mid-year can be necessary for some families, though not ideal. The process itself is straightforward. Here's what to know: Apply to the new school if they control their own admissions, or to the local council if not. Check your council's website. Councils must respond within 15 school days. If they offer a place, your child should start ASAP. Your current council may offer contacts for neighboring areas. But the new council's site will have the latest on openings. Once you submit the application, be patient through the process. Secure a spot as soon as one opens up. With some research and planning, switching schools mid-year can go smoothly for families. Reach out early and know it may take time. #schooltransfers #newbeginnings #inyearadmissions #moving #education

Despite recent commentary in the media, the facts are that taxpayer savings flowing from support to non-government schools are immense. A new research report from Catholic Schools NSW confirms that billions are saved via school choice and support for non-government schools. Our mixed model of schooling is a key strength of the education landscape. The Catholic sector supports all schools funded to their level of need, but the 'overprivileged' school narrative pushed by the public education unions and advocates does not survive impact with the facts. Such appeals to class envy should be returned to the bottom drawer of the 1970s. See my op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/gehNsdeQ and the report here: https://lnkd.in/gFm7rYg3
