I can confirm that everything is bigger in Texas. For example, did you know that Dallas Fort Worth International Airport covers an area larger than Manhattan? (17,207 acres / 26.89 square miles / 69.63 square kilometers, to be precise.) Many of the highways have six wide lanes, and there are turnpikes galore! Understanding the mammoth scale of a lot of the US infrastructure helps us understand why a lot of it has not been upgraded since the 1970s, more than fifty years ago. What is clear though is that the time seems to be now; many upgrades are in progress across the country, with some already completed. (Newark and LaGuardia airports are very visible examples of this.) Regardless of the election results, it looks like this path will still continue, with a big focus on more efficient infrastructure. There is no doubt that there are opportunities there. Speaking of upgraded infrastructure, it was wonderful to visit the relatively new Dallas office amidst many engaging meetings with advisors and institutions. Note to self: don't visit Texas in August again! (over 100 F / 40 C) 🌡️ 🥵 Dixie Green Rose Lord Mary Wallace #dwsambassador #xtrackers #togetherwegrow #usgreeninfra #texas

Quick-build has many advantages to traditional design and build methods of permanent infrastructure. Quick build approaches depend on the goals of a place, corridor, or engagement strategy. I look forward to working closely with my Sam Schwartz colleagues to explore what's possible in ways that seem too daunting for a permanent installation. I know many planners, urban designers, and transportation professionals see real shortfalls in a standard roadway design. We need to allow for re-imagining our roadways, especially those that serve as a multi-purpose, multi-modal, multi-programmable spaces for people and all of our needs. People do a lot of things in public spaces like streets that contribute to a desirable place to exist. As Jeff Speck notes, people are the "indicator species" that demonstrate if a city has streets serving them: People sitting/walking/celebrating, people on bikes, people on scooters, people conducting business, people moving freight, people in cars respecting other people, people exchanging culture, and people behaving socially. We know our streets are platforms for these healthy behaviors and the design can hinder or support such behaviors. Quick-build strategies allow us to test what works to support and unlock our better behaviors. I hope more people take up the challenge. We have a team that brings a lot of lessons learned to apply strategies like a pro. We also can help you win funding to make it happen.
Is quick build right for your project? Associate Dorottya Miketa, AICP, PP and West Coast General Manager Stephanie Shaw will be presenting on this critical intervention at the ITE Arizona/IMSA Spring Conference; 4/3 at 3:30 PM in Wildfire! #UrbanPlanning #UrbanDesign #transportation #mobility

🌎🚀: Exciting News from JFK International Airport! The PANYNJ announced a groundbreaking $125 million commercial redevelopment at JFK’s Terminal 8. This monumental project, following a recent $400 million expansion, is set to redefine your airport experience. 🛍️🍽️ Now that I’m on the other side of airport consumerism, it’s amazing to see what is involved to keep us flying. The project isn’t just about expansion, it’s about enhancing every aspect of the customer experience. Imagine over 60 new retail and dining options in the stunning new Great Hall, highlighting local and diverse businesses. It’s more than a renovation, it’s a community uplift! That’s what I truly appreciate, upbuilding our community. Plus, there is a focus on sustainability which means green choices at every turn. 🌱 The PANYJ is not just building an airport, they/we’re crafting future memories. Late last year we released Rebooting Delivery, a policy initiative that called for a central agency and co-ordinator general to leverage the economic opportunities the new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) had the potential to deliver for the region. Now the Minns Government delivered. The appointment of Infrastructure Co-ordinator General, Tom Gellibrand, to oversee the delivery of the infrastructure, housing and employment priorities around the Aerotropolis is great news for the West. And the rebranding and refocus of WPCA - led by incoming CEO Ken Morrison with Chair Jennifer Westacott AO – as the Bradfield Development Authority will help ensure the agency can get on with the important job of creating a world-class airport city. Because the opening of WSI is a once-in-a-century opportunity to attract global investors to the Aerotropolis and Bradfield City Centre. Delivering the much-needed infrastructure through a coordinated and streamlined approach can trigger the crucial momentum needed to establish new industries, smart jobs and sustainable energy solutions. The Aerotropolis needs to complement and not compete with the burgeoning city centres of Liverpool, Penrith and Campbelltown, and I congratulate Chris Minns for stepping up to the plate for Western Sydney to deliver what the former Government promised but fell short of. But make no mistake – there is no Western Sydney International Airport if it is not connected to Western Sydney. That’s why we need the long-called-for Rapid Bus network and critical road and rail transport links to connect people to services, jobs, homes and industry hubs. What we need now is for the Premier and Prime Minister to come together and create a laser-sharp delivery strategy to supercharge the region and ensure a focused approach for the booming West so we can create a true international gateway that will boost local, state and national economies for generations to come. I also challenge the government to be bold and designate WSI as an 'open skies' airport for the next ten years to encourage more and new airlines to provide regular international services in and out of the West.
Aerotropolis gets a boost with new co-ordinator general The Dialogue congratulates the NSW Government on its decision to appoint a Co-ordinator General to ensure the critical pieces of the Aerotropolis puzzle are managed effectively and efficiently. This was one of the key recommendations listed in the Dialogue’s policy paper ‘Rebooting Delivery’ ( https://shorturl.at/I2x2Y ) released late last year, which called for the appointment of a central agency, and single voice, that can leverage the economic development opportunities that the new Airport will provide and co-ordinate the delivery of critical infrastructure. Under this new governance model, the Aerotropolis is better placed to attract investment, generate high value jobs and promote industry opportunities. The Dialogue also welcomes the new Bradfield Development Authority, to be led by Ken Morrison, who will be separately tasked with leading the development of Bradfield City. Works are currently well underway at Bradfield, and upon completion, will include the exciting Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility, a new metro station, mixed-use facilities (including potentially up to 1000 homes) and a Central Park. The Motorway Map of Britain: The story of how this country was built from the ground up - by filling in a map of Britain's transport networks through the ages, and focusing on the UK's love-hate relationship with motorways. Since their fitful start in the 1950s, through the glamour of the swinging 60s, and the backlash against urban planning gone mad, we chart the progress of these epic engineering projects as they came to dominate our landscape. https://buff.ly/3TxVYRB

The City of Cleveland has released two key studies on the future of Burke Lakefront Airport! One study reviews the legal, operational, and financial implications of potentially closing the airport, while the other examines the economic impact of redeveloping the 245-acre site. A major takeaway is that Burke’s current economic impact is relatively small ($76.6M annually), and redevelopment could increase that to $92M, with plans to preserve 200 acres for parks and greenspace. Mayor Bibb emphasizes that no decision has been made, and stakeholder engagement will continue. The Meridian Rock Nestled in the pathway within Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS), stands a symbolic rock marking the Greenwich Meridian—the world’s prime meridian for both longitude and time. Established by international agreement in 1884, the Greenwich Meridian represents zero degrees longitude, forming the basis for global navigation and timekeeping. This prime meridian line, running from the North to the South Pole, divides the Eastern Hemisphere from the Western. At MPS Container Terminal, the meridian line (0°00'00.00"E/W) crosses our terminal, entering from the northern boundary (5°37'35.15"N) and extending to the coastline (5°37'29.75"N), where it reaches one of the closest points on Earth to the “Center of the World,” where the Greenwich Meridian (zero degrees longitude) intersects with the Equator (zero degrees latitude).
