At dymaptic, we believe it’s possible to build a strong company culture with a fully remote team. We’ve done this by hiring highly-skilled, highly-motivated team members, and making sure people have the tools and resources to succeed. Regardless of time zone, we strive to make sure everyone is working towards the same end goals, and no one is left wondering what to do. And yet – we also love when we get the opportunity to connect in person! Here’s more from our GIS team’s retreat in the Smoky Mountains last week. GIS Developer Ed Conrad perfectly sums up how this team-building experience will carry over to “regular” job duties: “We went white-water rafting on the Pigeon River starting at the Tennessee-North Carolina border on a stormy, rainy day when water levels were much higher than they’d been in the past 3 months. Our guide had a palatable sense of glee seeing the high-water levels and the high speed at which the water was traveling. He instructed us on safety and that we would need to paddle in sync to safely navigate rapids and avoid rocks. As we traveled down the river, he’d tell us about the upcoming rapids. The notable rapids were given names such as Lost Guide, Double Accelerator, and Tombstone. It might have been while steering through and over Double Accelerator when our guide told us that he couldn’t see over it, and it hadn’t ever looked that way before. The uncertainty heightened our concentration, as well as our excitement, and we locked in our feet and safely paddled through without anyone go overboard. Back on dry land at our computers, we routinely face and solve complex problems. Uncertainty invariably crops up, but we are adept and appreciate the challenges while problem-solving.” #remoteworklife #GIS #EsriPartner #havelaptopwilltravel

As we conclude this campaign, we would like to highlight our final team member; Rachel Ramoutar (see below). Hey everyone, am Rachel Ramoutar your Cadastral Unit Supervisor at L & S. I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about what I do and what makes my role here so fulfilling. So, in a nutshell, I'm the one who heads up one of the busiest departments at L & S. As the Cadastral Unit Supervisor, my team and I are all about making sure every job gets done right and every client walks away happy. From meeting with clients to tackling land-related issues to getting all the paperwork sorted, it's a busy job, but it makes it all the more exciting When I first started at L & S, what really intrigued me was getting to incorporate new technology, like drones into cadastral surveying and assessing historical satellite imagery for photogrammetric surveys. I've grown into this role, I also love meeting new clients. Each one has their own story and their own unique challenges and finding ways to solve their problems and keep them satisfied—that's a real goal for me. At L & S, honesty and ownership are the two core values that stand out for me. In this field, sure, there are days where things don't go exactly as planned, but I believe in owning up to it and pushing forward with honesty and integrity. For any new folks joining the surveying profession my advice: Ask questions—lots of them! And don't stress about what you can’t control. Life outside of work is always important as well (work-life balance) Find what works for you to keep the momentum going. For me, it's listening to music—it keeps me in the focused amidst the business of the day. Fun fact about me that most of you probably may or may not know I’m a dog person. I've got six furry friends at home, and if I could, I'd adopt even more. If you scroll through my phone, you'll see that about every fifth picture is of my dogs. Thanks for getting to know me!
